Most of us think that meditation is concentration. It is not and true. In a practical manner, meditation is thinking nothing.

I have learnt many types of meditation techniques. But the most simple technique is “aana-paana sati” which means ‘being with the breath’. Here ‘aana’ means ‘to inhale’ , ‘paana’ means ‘to exhale’ and ‘sati’ means ‘to be with’ . That is , ‘being with the breath’. You may also call it as ‘Breath Awareness Meditation’.

The method is as simple as it sounds. The only thing you have to do while meditation is to observe the breath. That’s all.

As I have already said that meditation is not concentration, here just you have to observe the breath and you should not try to control or regulate it.

The process :

1.

Sit in a comfortable position either on a chair or in ‘padmasana’ or ‘sukhasana’.

2.

Lock your hands with fingers crossed. (if you are sitting in a chair, then lock your feet and clasp your hands).
This is because, when meditating , we draw lot of cosmic energy from nature. So we should not let this energy get wasted.

3.

Close your eyes. And do not open until you finish the meditation.

4.

Take a deep breath and slowly exhale.

5.

Now onwards just observe the breath your inhaling and exhaling.

6.

In this moment, lots of disturbances may come to mind. Just ignore them all and come back to observe the breath.

7.

Continue the breathing until you decide to return back.

8. Slowly and steadily, taking your own time, open your eyes.

Isn’t it so simple. At first you may feel very difficult to concentrate on the breath. But gradually, by practice you can get the tempo.

Carefully note the steps and start meditation.
