| May 27, 1982 Dear Mother, Hi! How are you? Hope youre feeling fine. Did you have surgery yet? Are you all right now? I hope that youre okay now and I hope that it wasnt too hard on you. You know what? My steno-typing classes are done. We had our final exams today. We were supposed to have the finals last week but it was extended. But thats alright. At least we learned a few more stuff. We will get our classcards tomorrow. Benny brought the money that you sent. He gave us P400. What about our parcel? Have you received it yet? I hope so. Know what? I received a letter from UP. It says that I passed the entrance exam and there were application papers for enrolment enclosed. Also, application for scholarship. Uncle Gene saw the forms and told me to better enroll there. Anyway, I passed at UP Manila. He also suggested that I take Industrial Engineering. And so I went to UP here at Padre Faura near Taft Avenue and I inquired about enrolment. The other day, Auntie Charito and I went to a lawyer to have an affidavit made. I was gonna use Uncle Genes income tax return for the scholarship application. But it so happened that I also passed the scholarship exam at Centro. I already knew that before we even went to the lawyer. But I still chose UP because it is a much better school. But we received a call from Centro and I was asked to report there. I was the topnotcher at the exam and they are giving me the highest memorial scholarship. Uncle Gene and Auntie Charito got interested. They told me to pick Centro. I went there this morning. We, scholars, met the school president. He interviewed us. He was very nice. He said that he knew the Tapiadors. The Vice Dean of the College of Commerce also talked to me. He said that he was very happy that the topnotcher came from the College of Commerce. He was also very nice. Kaya lang ay may pagkabakla. I left my High School report card and other requirements with them. I will enroll tomorrow. And then, Ive also learned that there are only three courses offered here in UP Manila. There is no Commerce or Engineering. These two courses are offered only in UP Diliman. So I wasnt really that disappointed anymore. Because I was yesterday, when I learned that I was going to enroll at Centro. Anyway, UP requires several documents and its such a hassle. Thats why Uncle Gene and Auntie Charito lost interest. On the other hand, here is Centro offering me a scholarship. So I grabbed it. I have free tuition and miscellaneous fees for the first and second semester. I only have to spend on my uniform and books. Centro gave me the Librada Avelino Memorial Scholarship. Librada Avelino was the founder of CEU. And then, if I maintain high grades, they will extend my scholarship grant. By the way, I have a confession to make. You know, I was out the entire day on my birthday. I told Auntie Charito that I was meeting a teacher in the morning and then I really did have a class in the afternoon. But instead, Mark and I went out on a date. Hes the guy who was courting me. You dont have to worry because he is a very nice person. I know his family and they are well respected here. Mark has been here several times and we also talk on the phone. On my birthday, we first went to church before we went on our date. I hope you wont get mad. And please dont mention this on your letter. Auntie Charito always reads you letters to us. And she doesnt know about our date. Im scared to tell her. I know that there is nothing wrong in dating. The only thing is that I kept it a secret. Just write in your letter if youre okay with it or not and I will know what you mean. I hope that its okay with you. I wasnt going to tell you because I dont want you to worry or get mad. But I dont want to be unfair to you. I want you to know. Sige, til here. Get well soon. Take care. Yours, Irene |
