I just realised why joining The Hellfire Project was a bad idea; I can't talk about movies with any semblence of intelligence, wit or insight. My comments are pretty much restricted to "It was good." or "Ehh... It was all right." Pretty much, unless I'm talking about, like, Clay, I don't have much to say about anything. |

Eh, fuck it. I'll give this reviewing stuff a shot.
The worst thing about The Passion of the Christ was that it did not offend me. That was so disappointing! There was all that hoopla surrounding it. People were outraged! The movie demonized Jews!
No... it didn't Yeah, a group of Jews were the bad guys, but every movie needs a bad guy! Do you hear Arabs or Russians bitching everytime the new political thriller hits theatres?
The Passion of the Christ (or, simply, The Passion, as it's known to its friends) also let me down in the way of inspiration. Namely, I didn't get any. (Clearly, as you've seen in this review.) But yeah. Lately I have been more spiritual, for lack of a better word, but this movie didn't make me want to go to church any more. That was the other hoopla around it. It changed my life! It made me find God again!
What we have here, basically, is a nicely shot cinematic love letter to the Lord. It's evident throughout the movie how much the filmmakers cared about the story and the message. And if millions of people were touched by it, cool. More power to Mel Gibson and Jesus and stuff. My boss refused to watch the movie because he thinks it's disgusting that Mel Gibson has made such a profit on religion, like he's no better than those skeevy televangelists. But the movie didn't feel exploitative in any way to me.
The violence wasn't even that bad. It was realistic for sure. At least, I'm assuming that big ass metal hooks aren't going to tickle if they hit your skin. And I did like the part where the crow pecked out that guy's eyes. Finally! The violence I was promised!
Hey, but what was with the last shot of the movie being Jesus's ass? That's taking loving the Lord to a whole other level.
All in all, the movie was watchable. I watched it half in subtitles and half with the audio track for the visually impaired, where a dude describes what's happening onscreen and a chick reads the subtitles. I liked that. Foreign language movies for lazy people. Or, you know, the visually impaired. Same difference.
Am I going to hell for that? |
