Jan. 23, 2003  (Please forward and share this e-mail with all your friends)

To my friends in Uptown:

I have tried to keep everyone informed with community alerts regarding crime in our Uptown neighborhoods.  I hope you appreciate the serious nature of my e-mails about crime and I encourage you to share them with your friends and neighbors.

Time is short, but I would like to ask a minute of your time to discuss the upcoming election.  Time is critical because we are

approaching the first deadline for the Feb. 25 Aldermanic Elections.  All new registrations & reregistrations for our new neighbors' changes of addresses must be in Chicago Bd. of Election by Tues., Jan. 28th.  (Our new neighbors can register at Walgreens or Jewel on Sat. Jan 25, 2003).

Yesterday, Jan 22, I had the pleasure of working with Sandra Reed (candidate for 46th Ward Alderman) at the Wilson 'L' Station.

Sandra always had my vote, on Wednesday, she won my heart.  Ms. Reed did much more than 'glad-hand' the 'L' riders, Ms. Reed truly cares for the people of Uptown.  During the short time we were in the 'L' Station lobby, she helped a young mother get to a friend's apt; she counseled a lady veteran of the US Army; and she gave 'tough love' to man who had to much to drink by insisting he call his mother. Her one on one contact gave a helping hand to our fellow citizens, not a 'glad-hand' of a professional politician.

Last week, Sandra Reed expressed outrage concerning crime and lack of safety at our Uptown 'L' Stops.  She stated the obvious, our stations need better lighting and more security.  Sandra took the first step in solving the problem, Sandra recognizes that crime is a problem in Uptown and together we must take steps to solve the crime problem.

When the newspapers asked our current alderman about crime at the Uptown 'L' Stations - Shiller's reply -- "The women [Sandra Reed] makes things up!"  Shiller should run for 'Queen of Denial.'  The first step to solve any problem is to recognize there is a problem, not to deny the crime problem.  Shiller refused to march against the drug dealers & gang bangers of the 46th Ward.  When asked about drug dealers in Uptown she said "Not Up Here!"  When I called her office about the window smashing attack on 4700 N. Magnolia, Denice Davis said, "Crime in Uptown is no worse than any other part of the city."  Is that why Helen moved out of Uptown to Andersonville?  Crime is three times worse in Uptown than it is in Andersonville.  Then we read in the Dec. 22 Chicago Sun-Times, that gangbangers influence politics of the 46th Ward.  Is that why Helen denies the crime problem?  Is she protecting the gangbangers?

I take it personally when Shiller said the crime numbers were "made up."  If anything, the crime stats at the 'L' Stations are underreported.  Look at just one horrible incident.  On Tuesday evening, Dec. 17, a prostitute assaulted two people, & committed a felony-strong-arm robbery -- but was only charged with one misdemeanor.  Let's review the crimes of Dec. 17 - a woman coming home from work on the 'L' gave a homeless some money. A prostitute - Diane Thomas - saw this and demanded money from the woman.  The woman said no, Diane assaulted her.  Our neighbor took out his cell phone to call 911.  Diane Thomas ripped the phone out of his hand and it broke in two.  A security guard for a local store saw the incident, he called 911 and both followed the prostitute to Kenmore & Wilson.  Our neighbor filed charges against Diane Thomas but the police would only charge her with criminal damage to property.

Shiller's solution to this problem is to ignore crime and crime might go away when a new station is built in three or four years.  No Helen,  I choose not to wait.  I choose to vote you out of office in four weeks (Feb. 25) and work on solving crime problems with Sandra Reed - Now! I urge you to do the same, Just Say No to Helen on Tues. Feb. 25th.

Thank you for your time.  But time is short and our new neighbors must register to vote now.  Please go to http://66.107.4.23/ (Chicago Board of Elections) to get the registration form, thanks again –

Sincerely,
