When everything goes wrong.
When everything goes wrong.
by Helene Ibrahim

There are those days when everything goes wrong. We all have them now and then.
Some teachers have them constantly.

When you keep working harder and harder but get less and less done.  When children look to you like  bats - the bad South American rainforest sort that visits you at night!   When that  feeling  doesn't  pass  but gets worse for every day, making it hard to work and to teach...
Then perhaps you are what has been defined as "burnt out".  It is a form of work stress that befalls people who spend most of their time taking care of others, teachers, social workers, nurses and so on. It also happens to managers on a medium level, always having to live with the conflicting demands and expectations of superiors and subordinates. Whatever they do, someone is always mad at them. Workers having little or none influence over their own work situtation can also experience being "burnt out".
All of them feel a stress, originated from a work situation that they cannot handle. Many stay in their professions only because they cannot afford to quit, doing a poor job, though exhausting themselves severely!

That won't happen to me you are sure to say. I'm a good teacher and I love my job! - Now, the ambitious ones are hit by it first! Though it will hopefully not be you!

If you feel signs of being extemely overworked, not appreciated at work, less motivated to go to work and  overall get less and less done, then you might consider following the suggested 10 steps below to come in shape again: - )

1. Bringing changes about is never easy. To give it a good start, take some time and perhaps some money too to establish a good contact with the people around you!
Suggest to your husband that you will spend one evening a week going out together. You take turns to pay the bill. Put in this nice way, he will  probably not reject your suggestion! - )

2. When that is done and established, begin to say "No" to things that you do not want to do. Either skip them or get yourself some help to do them for you! Tell your children kindly but firmly that you need to rest for a while and expect them to help you out with chores around the house. Make simpler food too,  that saves time and effort.

3. Having come this far, you have taken down your   and other perople's expectations about you to a realistic level. You accept that you do not have to be perfect all the time and need to rest for some time.

4. You relax and rest.

5. You find some new energy, so now, do some fun things that you like!!! Take up your old and forgotten hobbies - sewing, jogging, painting, whatever simple activities you like and get pleasure from: - )
6. Get yourself a free evening or afternoon a week! Put your childern at your mother's or leave them for an extra hour in their day-care center!

7. Spend some time on your own! Doing things you really like! If your economy allows it, get yourself another job temporarily. Do not quit your old job, but take a leave or work reduced hours. If your economy is in bad shape, take some time to fix it now...
