Verbos defectivos

Defective verbs are special verbs in the language because they lack some grammatical persons and verb tenses. In order to understand them, make sure you review (regular) verb conjugation patterns and primitive and derived tenses.

Defective verbs you need to know
Example Tip Presente do indicativo
abolir When removing the infinitive ending (-er or -ir), there are only the persons followed by e or i in the verb patterns. eu -
tu aboles
ele abole
nós abolimos
vós abolis
eles abolem
 

Since these verbs don't have the 1st person singular of the presente do indicativo, they are not conjugated in the:

  • Presente do subjuntivo;

  • Imperativo negativo.

Besides, they only have the second persons (singular and plural) of the imperativo afirmativo.

They are regular verbs in other conjugations.

Other verbs:

aturdir => to stun

banir => to banish

brandir => to brandish

bramir => to yell

carpir => to weed

colorir => to color

delinqüir => to commit a crime

esculpir => to carve, to engrave

explodir => to explode

exaurir => to exhaust

fulgir => to shine

impingir => to impinge, to foist

ruir => to collapse

soer => to be accustomed to

They are regular verbs in other conjugations.

Other verbs:

falir => to go bankrupt

florir => to flourish, to blossom

remir => to redeem

ressarcir => to compensate, to indemnify

Example Tip Presente do indicativo
reaver It follows the conjugation pattern of verb haver, but only has the verb forms which keep the consonant v along all tenses and moods. eu -
