Coordinating Clauses

Orações coordenadas

Unlike subordinating clauses, introduced by conjunções subordinativas (subordinating conjunctions) and pronomes relativos (relative pronouns), coordinating clauses present conjunções cooordenativas (coordinating conjunctions). Look at the chart below:

Portuguese conjunction	Basic meaning	Example	English
e	and	Ele trabalha e estuda.	He works and studies.
e	and	Ele trabalha, e ela estuda.	He works, and she studies.
e	but	Ele lê muito, e não compreende nada.	He reads a lot, but doesn't understand anything.
mas	but	Ela ainda não leu o livro, mas sabe a história inteira.	She still hasn't read the book, but knows the whole story.
porém Conjunctions that share the same meaning and same puctuation rules: contudo todavia entretanto no entanto	however	Ele assiste a filmes de ficção científica, porém prefere filmes de suspense.	He watches science fiction movies, but prefers suspense movies.

não só...mas (também) or não só...senão	not only...but also	Jorge não só comprou muitos presentes, mas também preparou a ceia natalina.	Jorge not only bought a lot of gifts, but (also) prepared the Christmas supper.
ou	or	Não sei se vou comprar um carro ou uma motocicleta.	I don't know if I'll buy a car or a motorcycle.
ou...ou	either...or	Ou você ou eu ganharei o prêmio.	Either you or I will win the prize.
nem tampouco	nor	Ela não sabe cozinhar nem dirigir.	He can't cook, nor can he drive.
nem...nem	neither...nor	Nem ele nem eu iremos.	Neither he nor I will go.
nem...nem	either...or	Ele não sabe nem cozinhar nem dirigir.	He can't either cook or drive.
quer...quer	whether...or	Quer chova quer não chova, estarei lá.	Whether it rains or not, I'll be there.
pois (explanation)	for	Ela deve estar triste, pois o namorado está no hospital.	She must be sad, for her boyfriend is in hospital.
pois (conclusion)	so therefore	Tenho certeza de que ele vai conseguir o emprego; não fique, pois, ansiosa.	I'm sure he will get the job, so don't get uptight.
portanto Conjunctions that share the same meaning and same punctuation rules: logo por conseguinte	so therefore	Nós terminaremos o relatório até a data prevista; portanto não fique irritado.	We will have finished the report by the deadline, so don't get uptight.
	so therefore	Nós terminaremos o relatório até a data prevista; não fique, portanto, ansioso.
