When  Ruffa  Gutierrez competed in the Binibining  Pilipinas  of  1993, everyone was expecting her to walk away with the Miss Philippines Universe title.

It didn't happen. Dindi Gallardo, much to everyone's surprise, grabbed the title and Ruffa was Miss Philippines World.

Sun City, South Africa. Ruffa stood out from  amongst  all  the  delegates of that night's  pageant. Everyone, including the judges,  thought  she  would  walk  away with the crown.

Again, it didn't happen. Ruffa was 2nd Runner-up  to  Miss  World 1993, Lisa Hanna of Jamaica.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO RUFFA IN SUN CITY?

After the pageant, Jackie Chan and some other  judges were a bit puz-zled with the night's results. A few of  them  clearly  voted f or her as Miss  World  and somehow, it just didn't  seem right that she was just 2nd  Runner-up!  Could  it  be that Eric  Morley  changed the results to suit  his  political  agenda  and  gain favor  from  the  South Africans on the  year that they were celebrating the  end  of  apartheid?  Clearly,  a black winner will gain more sympa- thy and support! Politics, politics...
Ruffa,  with her looks,  brains, ability to speak well in public, and self confidence should  have been sent to Miss Universe instead. If Binibini was just wise enough,
1993  could  have  been  a good year for Ruffa at Miss Universe where she had to compete  with  Puerto  Rico's Dayanara Torres!  The  year  1994 was out of the question, since the pageant was held in Manila, a clear disadvantage!

Will the Philippines ever see a Filipina  Miss  World? Politics and favoritism aside, not at all remote!  In  fact,  it is long o-
verdue!  If  only  Mr. Morley would play his cards right, the Philippines should  have  had 2 Miss  World titleholders by now, Evangeline in 1973 and Ruffa  in  1993. Will  the tide ever  change? We  shall see !
A FILIPINA MISS WORLD IS LONG OVERDUE!
