Evangeline
Pascual

The 1973 Unofficial Miss World?
Ms. Evangeline Pascual  goes down in Philippine history as the country's  first   'unofficial'   Miss World. Was offered the crown but modestly re- fused it! The 1973 Miss Republic of the Philip- pines  explains  why  it was  no  longer  worth becoming the country's Miss World titleholder:
"I  REFUSED!"
"I was stooping too low for the country. Miss World gets a '10,' I got an '8,' and she  (Marjorie),  got a '6.'  That  crown was  for  me. That  crown  was for  the Philippines.  We  kept  our  dignity  !!!"

AMERICAN ACTOR GREGORY PECK BROKE THE TIE BETWEEN EVANGELINE & MARJORIE !
Who else but the Chairman of the Board of Judges would break the tie  between 2 lovely  ladies ?  American judge Gregory Peck would naturally favor Miss USA over Miss Philippines!  Do  we need  to explain  more? As  destiny would  have it,  Marjorie was  dethroned  months  later. Perhaps nature's way of saying, "Hey, that title was never yours  in the first place to  begin with! Just give it  back!"
MISS PHILIPPINES WORLD DELEGATES THROUGH THE DECADES . . .
MINERVAMINERVA
Maita Gomez was a famous cover girl of the 60's. She is well remembered for her daring move of cut-ting her hair in a short  geometric style that reminded everyone of 60's English waif model superstar, 'Twiggy.'

Anna Veneracion will always be remembered as the Miss Philippines who withdrew from compe-tition in protest of the apartheid policy in South Africa. She was rumored to have been a favorite.
In the picture below right, Anna appears with delegates from eight other countries to form the 'Magic Nine' of the 1977 Miss World competition. Sweden's delegate,
Anna Melissa Veneracion

Mary Stavin, seated right next to Anna, eventually won the title. What is so in-teresting about this 'Magic Nine'  was that  most of  them did well at the finals.
Eva Marie Duringer of  Austria  was a semi-finalist,  the UK's  Madeleine Stringer was a final-ist,  Miss  Brazil Madalena Baraini was 3rd  Runner-up, Cindy Darlene Miller of the USA was 4th Runner-up, Dagmar Gabrielle Winkler of Germany was 2nd Runner-up, and Miss Australia Jaye Liane Hopewell was also a finalist. What could  have  been Anna's fate had she not withdrawn from the  competition? The  Miss  World crown? First Runner up perhaps? Who knows? One thing was  sure  though, Anna proved that she's  got what  it takes when she later competed  at  the 1978  Miss  Ambar del Mundo Pageant in  the  Dominican Republic and landed as 2nd Runner-Up!
Anna  could  have been  the first Fili-pina  Miss World!

RUFFA RUFFA
Marina  Benipayo originally won the Miss Philippines Maja International title in 1992. The real  Miss Philippines  for Miss World, Marilen Espino, was unable to compete due to illness; and Marina was sent instead. Ma- rilen later competed at the Miss Maja Inter-national Pageant. Both ladies were success- ful  ramp  and commercial  models prior to their  stint at  the Miss  Philippines contest.

Ruffa Gutierrez almost bagged the title at the 1993 Miss World Finals in  South Africa.  Politics played a major  part in that  year's pageant.

A year later, the tall and slim Cara Subi-jano  also  hit  the headlines when she made it to the semi- finals of Ms.World.

Kristine Rachel Florendo  is certainly one of the most
gorgeous  Miss Philippines ever. Every  inch a beauty queen! But alas, the judges at the Miss World Pageant just  ignored her.  Kristine could  have  been a winner, if only Binibini handled her training well enough!

Lalaine Edson
Miss Philippines World 1999
British Filipina Lalaine Edson was under tremendous pres-sure in 1999 to do well in Miss World right after Miriam's 1st Runner-Up finish at Miss  Universe.  Though she tried her best,  she did not make it to the ten semi-finalists.
Katherine De Guzman
Miss Philippines World 2000
What is in store for Katherine De Guzman for the Year 2000? Will she break the long dry spell and finally bring home the Miss World  crown  that  has eluded the  Filipina's grasp  during the past few decades? We can only hope  and  wait as the 50th ani-versary of Miss World unfolds!
KATHY : SHINING THROUGH !!!
I am simply amazed on how  much  Kathy  has polished  her looks and poise over the past few months!  From  her Bini-bini portrait above, to her pic  with Nina (left),  and to her official portraits on the right,  the  metamor-phosis is truly incredible!
A WINNER !!!
"Katherine  has  that  endearing  smile that engages and captivates. It is as if you have known her for some time now. Like a lost friend you haven't seen in years..."
                                               -Heimlich
KATHY AS MISS WORLD 2000?
WHY NOT?
NOT AT ALL IMPOSSIBLE! IT'S ABOUT TIME!
Okay, okay, I'm going a step ahead, but  come to think  of it,  this is  not impossible at all! The crown suits her perfectly! Is this a forecast of things to  come?  Who knows? This  year might just be it. Big things come in small packages.  The unexpected is always a welcome surprise !!!
Here  is  one  of  the  best Miss Philippines delegates  I have ever seen. Reminds us all of  the  Binibinis  of  the 70's. An excellent combination  of  hometown  beauty  and brains to match! And take note, the girl is no  airhead  and  can  seriously  talk !!!
Cecilia Amabuyok

4th Runner-up at Miss World
Cecilia Amabuyok, the novice nun who entered the Miss Republic of the Philippines contest without the knowledge of her convent superi- ors! Never the less, the dusky lady went on to become the hot favorite in London and eventually landed as 4th Runner-up! What a fitting end- ing to a girl who gave new mean-ing to the phrase, "full of grace, the Lord is with thee."
