The Miss Philippines

Chest
........Miss........ ...Philippines...
Miss Universe
.....of 1969......
Gloria Diaz hit the headlines as the Philippines' first Miss Universe,  just 5 years after Gemma Cruz won the count-
ry's  first Miss  International crown! What a way to end the decade  with another  victory.
Gloria,  the dusky,  articulate Filipina  with the distinct pout impressed the judges with her wits, humor and relaxed ways at the Miss Universe Pageant!
The  product of a big  family,
Gloria will always be remem-
bered  for her 'man from the moon' final interview which she tackled with an unrehear-
sed answer that ultimately got her the crown.

The Philippines does it again! Four years after Gloria won the title in the USA, Margie wins it again in Athens, Greece. Miss Philippines origi-nally  joined the  local pageant without the pri-
or knowledge of her parents and only informed them right after her coronation. Margie packed a  serious punch  in Athens  with her elegant ways, queenly demeanor & excellent upbring-
ing. After her arrival in Greece, she was also voted  as Miss Photogenic  by the local press.
Her  proclamation as Miss Universe  was no surprise, for she was simply the best. After her reign,  she made  one movie  entitled, "Oh, Margie, Oh," opposite local heartthrob Cocoy Laurel. The movie was not as successful as it should have been, which did not bother Margie at all. She has since become a successful busi-
nesswoman and entrepreneur.

Maria Isabel Lopez was perhaps the most controversial Miss Philippines of all time. Haunted by a 'dark' past, she was asked to step down right after she won the title. Bold-ly defiant, she refused and went on to com-
pete in Lima, Peru. After her reign, she fell to the lure of Philippine cinema.

Geraldine Asis
Miss Philippines Universe 1987
Semi-finalist at 1987 Miss Universe
Geraldine was the favorite of the public and the press during the 1987 pageant in Singapore where her very Asian looks were well received. She did well enough to advance into the semi-finals and will always be remembered for her black eve-ning gown! She eventually resumed modelling and tried her luck in the world of Philippine cinema.

Melinda Gallardo was the surprise of the night during the Miss Philippines  Pageant of 1993.  Everyone thought  that Ruffa Gutierrez would walk away with the Miss Philippines Universe title!  Melinda did poorly in the  Miss Universe Pageant while Ruffa had the crowd on her feet at Sun City, South Africa and almost became the first Filipina Miss World.

Violeta Naluz competed at the 1986 Miss Universe Pageant in Panama City, Panama. She won the Miss Philippines title on the very same year that the world famous 'People Power' Revolution took place in the Manila. Violeta placed poorly at the swimsuit preliminaries, ending up as 58th out of 77!
