What  made these beauty queens of the 60's
& the 70's so different? Will Miss Philippines ever be the same again? Should  Filipinas go back to their roots and  perhaps regain  their  country's status as a 'Pageant Powerhouse?'

The sixties and the seventies were certainly the glo-
ry days of the Philippines in international pageants. Three Miss International crowns, two Miss Universe titles, and a number of runner-up and semi-final fini- shes all  seemed to strengthen the country's growing reputation as a pageant powerhouse. Sad to say, the
quality of the  delegates and the  management of the representatives have slowly deteriorated over the years, thus ending the country's claim to pageant superiority in Asia. The last great winner the count-
ry has  had  was way  back in 1979, when Melanie Marquez was crowned Miss International in Tokyo.

Whatever happened to the old fashioned, time-
less Terno? No one else can give justice to this unique dress but the Filipina herself. Enough of foreign designers who know nothing about this dress! Bring back the talents of Filipino design-
ers who know the 'Ins' & 'Outs' of the Terno!

Simonette de los Reyes
Miss Philippines Universe 1970
The Filipina image that the world of the 60's and the 70's fell in love with. The long, straight jet black hair; the dark, almond shaped eyes enhanced by false eye- lashes; the flawless alabaster skin, and most impor-
tant of all, Miss Philippines  wearing the world fam-
ous national dress, the TERNO! Miss Philippines, do
not abandon your roots! Do not abandon success !!!
Vida Doria
Miss Philippines Universe 1971
Miss Photogenic in Miss Universe
Vida Doria won the Miss Photogenic Award in  the 1971  Miss Universe Pageant, where
Lebanon's Georgia Risk emerged as the win-
ner. This was of course, way  before the in-
ternet  age, where  the photographers  them-
selves voted for the most photogenic gal.

Charina Zaragoza in evening gown. Now that is what I call glamour! The ingredients?
Well, there's the elbow length gloves, the
one shouldered cut of the outfit with match-
ing wispy stole, the mega dangling earrings, and of course, the typical hairstyle of that
decade, the bouffant beehive! Dear, dear
Miss Philippines, how fair thou art. No won-
der you were the toast of Asia during your glory days. When will we see you again?

Armi Barbara Crespo
Miss Philippines Universe 1972
Semi-finalist at 1972 Miss Universe
Armi  Barbara Crespo caused  quite a stir during the Miss Universe  Pageant evening gown competition in Dorado, Puerto Rico. The audience broke into a thun-
derous  applause when  she opened her evening dress jacket to reveal the even more  impressive gown that lay  underneath. Likewise, Rosario  Silayan is also re-
membered for her 'mermaid like' evening gown style
in  Seoul, Korea. Two evening gowns, 2  ladies who made the cut, 2 beauty queens who hit the headlines!
