..IMAGES OF MISS UNIVERSE... ..........1994 - PART TWO

The Philippines seems to be a very good host when it comes to beauty pageants.  They  not  only give the girls the very best, but also use them to the max! If I remember right, the girls  hardly  had any break whatso-ever  during  their  stay.  Never the less, they enjoyed themselves even  if  there  were a few mishaps! Miss Mexico reportedly almost fainted due  to  the  heat and exhaustion!

..THE DAY I MET SUSHMITA

During my flight attendant days, I had  the  honor  and  pleasure  of meeting Sushmita on a flight from Bombay to Dubai. She just won the Femina  India title at that time. This gal  is  amazing!  Tall,  dusky, very nice  and  her  presence  was over- powering! From that moment on, I knew  she  would  become famous, and she did!

.....MISS ASIA....... ...PACIFIC 2000

Miss  Josephine Canonizado of the Philippines  repre-sents  the country in this year's Miss Asia Pacific Pageant. Now on it's last year as a regional compe-tition,  the  pageant will reach greater heights  next year
as  the  'Miss Earth' beauty pageant! With the new title, the organizers hope to reach a broader audience with more contestants from  all  over  the  globe.  For this year's competition,  Josephine  has  opted  for a Muslim  inspired  national  costume (right) which suits her well. A far cry from Nina Ricci Alagao's ill fated national costume at this  year's Miss Universe Pageant. Whoe-ver  designed Josephine's costume clearly knew what he was doing! Hurray! Finally, a costume that actually is a national dress!

WHO WILL BE THE LAST MISS ASIA PACIFIC?
.....A RARE SIGHTING

Finally,  a  rare  sighting of
the elusive Miss Philippines,  Katherine  A.  De Guzman!  Perhaps  the  least  hyped, least publicized, least pho- tographed beauty queen of them  all!  What's  with the low  profile?  Perhaps  the Binibini  organizers want to keep everything low key so as  not  to  put  too  much pressure  on  the  pretty Manila coed. Kathy, by all means,  is  no  wallflower, just  wait  and see...it's the unexpected  that  always bring surprises! Go Kathy!
...A DAY IN... ...THE LIFE
.OF RACHEL

Kristine Rachel Florendo, Miss Philippines World of 1997
shows us that beauty  pa- geants can also be fun!  One may  not  win the crown, but friends won are more enduring than  a  year long  reign!
Rachel is by far one of the most beautiful  girls ever to wear the title of Miss Philippines!
..LET ME TRY AGAIN.

Mutya  Crisostomo Laxa is  no  stranger to beauty pageants.  Her mom was once  a  Mutya  of  the Philippines  titleholder!
Following in the tradition of  her  mother,  Mutya first  competed  at  the Binibining  Pilipinas where she emerged only as  a runner-up. Unstop-pable in her pursuit of a title, she went on to com-pete in  the Mutya of the Philippines  Pageant and eventually bagged the ho- nor  of  representing  the country in the Miss Asia Pacific Pageant where she landed as 2nd Run- ner-up to Miss  Israel.

......FOUR CROWNS TO DATE........

The  Philippines has won the Miss Asia Pacific title four times already. The first was won in 1982 by Maria Ines Zarago-za,  followed  by Gloria Dimayacyac in 1983, Lorna Legaspi in 1989, and final-ly  by  Michelle Aldana in 1993. Seems like Miss Philippines has had better trai-ning  and  luck  in  this pageant as com- pared to Miss Universe or Miss World!

MISS TOURISM WORLD 2000

Miss  Philippines Rachel Soriano is 2nd Runner-up in the recently  concluded Miss Tourism World Pageant in Malta. Miss Venezuela is the new winner and Miss Lithuania  is  1st  Runner-up.  Rachel  lived up to the expectations  by  representing  the  country very well. She used the same national costume (right) that Nina Ricci  Alagao  wore  at the Miss Universe Pageant in Cyprus. Congratulations to you, Rachel!

KATHY IN LONDON

Katherine Annwen De Guzman may not exactly be one of the favorites at  the  2000 Miss World Pageant in London, but doesn't stop her from being  noticed  by  the  most  trained eyes in Pageantdom. Henrique of Global Beauties has this to say about Kathy : "Kathy doesn't strike you with  her looks, but she does it with her words and her eyes. When she talks, you have to listen to her. She and Miss India are the best when it comes to being eloquent and speaking to a large audience. The difference is that Kathy is more natural. Miss Philippines although not stunning, has a  peaceful  beauty  and  I  am  sure when it comes to interviews she will rock.  She  is  currently at 4 and 3/4 stars, but I may soon give her a per-fect  score.  IMPRESSIVE. To all Filipinos, what I have to say is, what- ever  happens,  be  proud of an AMAZING representative."
NOT NECESSARILY EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE GAL

Disadvantages? You don't get too much press coverage, not much media attention. Nobody cares whether you are pretty, eloquent or well educa-ted. Could be disheartening during meetings with the press! Advantages?
First  of  all,  pressure to win is off. In the absence of stress, candidates fare better. If she doesn't win, no harm done. If she wins the title, what a surprise to everyone it will be! Kathy definitely has the advantage!
