Whales
Day 1

Pre-instructional:
TSW name the four major oceans.
TTW ask the students what they know about whales (KWL Chart)
TTW review over vocabulary words for Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man.

Procedure 1:
a. TSW will predict what Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man by Robert McCloskey is about.
     TTW stop periodically and allow the students to predict what will happen next.
b. TTW read the story to the class (pages 1-25).
c. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:

a. TTW show the students a picture of a whale.
b. TTW tell the students facts about whales.
c. TSW tell what they have learned.

Procedure 3:
a. TSW make a sailor hat.
b. TSW fold the top corners to the center.
c. TSW fold one lower flap to each side.
d. TSW fold the corners down and staple.
e. TSW decorate the hat.

Vocabulary for Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man

retired- doesn�t work anymore, usually because of age.
geraniums- house plant with pretty pink flowers.
pantry- a closet in the kitchen where food is kept.
impatience- do not like to wait.
tiller-  tills the soil/ breaks up the ground.
bait- food to catch a fish or animal.
cod- a fish found in the Atlantic Ocean. Big fish like to eat them.
blubber- fatty part of whale that keeps them warm. We get some of our oil from whales.
pliers- tool that pinches and holds something tight.
contentment- happy with yourself.
     


Day 2
Pre-instructional:
TTW review over vocabulary words for Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man.

Procedure 1:
a. TSW will predict what will happen next in Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man.
     TTW stop periodically and allow the students to predict what will happen next.
b. TTW read the story to the class (pages 26-46).
c. TSW answer questions about the story.

Procedure 2:
a. TSW tell  facts that they have learned about whales.
b. TTW write the student�s answers on the board.

Procedure 3:
a. TSW make a whale.
b. TSW trace a whale template twice onto two pieces of black construction paper.
c. TSW cutout small circles for the eyes.
d. TSW sponge gray paint on the whale.
e. TTW staple the two whales partly together.
f. TSW stuff the whale with tissue paper.
g. TTW staple the whale completely together.
h. TSW put a band-aid on their whale like the one in the story.
i. TTW display the student�s work.
