NOTE: According to early history written down by granddaughter Lucile (Cowden) Yates, James father and mother died of contagious disease and he went to live with an uncle. No mention of what happened to brothers or sisters or if he had any. James was said to have been born in Mercer Co., KY. Served in MO Cavalry 20 months, discharged 13 June 1865 in Springfield. Served under Kelly. Also some has his middle name as Allen. Again, I can find no middle name mentioned any where. 17 July 1999 Received 30 plus pages of James Yates Pension records from NATIONAL ARCHIVES TRUST FUND, Washington D.C. and his record of lost of eye sight from the civil war. James Yates served 1 Nov 1863 in company I of the 16th regiment of Missouri Cavalry Volunteers commanded by Captain Morgan Kelly. Discharged at Springfield, MO 13th day of June 1865. Death certificate filled out by Jame's wife gives his father as Joseph and mother as Harriett Erby (?) question mark is hers. Said he was born near Haro LDSburg, KY. She died a few weeks later. James married Eliza Jane Thompson on 9 Mar 1845. (Eliza Jane Thompson was born on 18 Dec 1828, died on 24 Oct 1911 in Dallas Co., Missouri and was buried in Dallas Co., Missouri.)
