Wado Divisions
Wado Ryu karate remained united until 1979. At this time, the JKF Wado Kai supported by the Japanese goverment and the Japan Karate Federation (JKF), dissociated administratively from Sensei Hironori Otsuka. A few years after the death of Sensei Otsuka, this organization of Wado took a different iddentity, the JKF Wado Kai, under Sensei Eiichi Eiriguchi.

Thereafter Hironori Otsuka founded Wado-Ryu Renmi which remained united until the death of the founder, Sensei Hironori Otsuka, in 1982.Sensei Jiro Otsuka, Hironori Otsuka's son, took the direction of the organization.

Thereafter several political problems in America, Europe and Japan appeared. Several differences with the katas and the techniques appeared also. Sensei Tatsuo Susuki tried on several occasions to join together the organization of Wado and its efforts were summarized with failures as soon as he left Japan. In front of this growing dissatisfaction, Sensei Suzuki realized that it was now time to take a direction different from Jiro Otsuka's to preserve the teachings of Sensei Hironori Otsuka. For this reason, Sensei Suzuki founded his own international organization, Wado International Karate Federation.

In 1989, Sensei Jiro Otsuka changed his name to Hironori Otsuka II, succeeding his father. With various interpretations and by carrying out certain changes there on regular bases, Wado Ryu became a divided entity.

In 1982, after the death of Sensei Otsuka, Sensei Masaru Shintani, not believing in the changes brought by Jiro Otsuka, aslo decided to found his own organization, the Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation. Faithsul to teaching and to the concepts of Wado which Sensei Otsuka taught him. Shintani Wado Kai Federation is the largest organization of karate in North America under one style. Several other organizations under Sensei Shintani, of which Wado Kai Karate Associated of Canada and several others were founded, therefore dividing Sensei Shintani's teachings in majority through Canada and the United States.

In 1989, Masfumi Shiomitsu Sensei, after several years under Sensei Jiro Otsuka, founded his own distinct organization, the Wado ryu Karate-Do Academy.
