Shakspeare's Tragedies
Update July 5, 2002
I have just begun to build this page on Shakespeare's tragedies.  I start with the tragedies because they are my favorite of all Shakespeare's plays.  I can read Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, Julius Ceasar and Romeo and Juliet at any time and am never bored with them.  I was once taught that this characteristic is central to all great literature.  The surprise ending that fools us all is not the mark of a great book.  What makes it great is that one enjoys the journey through the work.  That each reading brings new insight regardless of how a novel, play or short story ends.  This is how I feel about Shakespeare's tragedies, or all of his work for that matter.  Even though I know about Hamlet's, Othello's, Desdemona's, or Lear's, deaths, the journey through each of the play's five acts is wonderful with every reading.

Thank you for your patience.  Please
e-mail me if you have any suggestions for what to include in this page.
