I am currently working on obtaining my initial teaching certication for TExES Field 138 (Life Science 8-12). I plan to teach high school biology. Tradebooks can help students become engaged in subjects they might not have considered interesting. Starting with the tradebook in this book talk, The Race To Save the Lord God Bird, I plan to start collecting environmental and science-related tradebooks now for my future class library. I haven't observed any classrooms yet and none of the teachers I have interviewed have a classroom library. I have noticed, however, that many schools do promote reading and encourage students and the community to read. For example, Midway ISD in Waco, Texas has an accelerated reading program as well as another program called "Midway Reads," which is designed to involve the community and families of students in reading activities. |
