| EXTRA CREDIT IDEAS |
| Homework is work that you do at home. However, you do not need to wait for a teacher to assign homework. There can be real rewards for a student who participates in science-related activities that take place beyond the school day and outside the school building. You can assign yourself homework! The sky is the limit! Take flying lessons, build a detailed model of a hot air balloon, learn cloud identification, construct and monitor your own weather station, find constellations in the night sky, track and record phases of the moon, take air quality measurements, study the various layers of the earth's atmosphere, find out about the history of kites. Self-directed learning is important. It is a lifelong skill. It is important for folks at home to help you and encourage you to complete EXTRA CREDIT [XC] projects and activities. Check out the suggestions on the links listed below. It is important enough for me to offer points for EXTRA CREDIT work. Here are the rules: 1. All regular classwork & homework must be completed/turned in. [EXTRA CREDIT points will be granted only if any & all missing work has been turned in. Check with me to make sure that you are eligible for XC, or to find out what's missing.] 2. Suggested activities and projects carry from 1-4 points. You many earn up to 15 points of XC per marking period. [EXTRA CREDIT may not be carried over into another marking period.] 3. EXTRA CREDIT must be completed, documented, and turned in at least one week prior to the end of a marking period. A brief note from a parent or an e-mail message will be sufficient. [No XC will be accepted after the set date.] 4. EXTRA CREDIT is not a substitute for doing quality work on daily class work and/or on regular homework. EXTRA CREDIT can be fun, because you are in charge-- you get to decide what you want to learn. You can study a science topic that interests you and your family. You don't have to limit your learning to topics we study in 6th grade. You won't have to wait for teacher-assigned homework. I have tried to provide lots of ideas and a variety of methods for you to use to share what you learn. |
