Stage
'The Elephant Man' by Bernard Pomerance, 1979
This is certainly the most well known stage version of Josephs' story. It was a hit in Londons' West End, and on Broadway, winning a number of awards, including three Tonys - Broadways highest honor. The play covers the last six years of Joseph's life, from the time he first meets Dr. Treves, through his years living at the London Hospital. Based on the book by Ashley Montagu (see the books section), it contains many of the same historical inaccuracies as the Lynch film - most notably, Joseph is once again referred to as John. Dr. Treves is shown in a most unflattering light as an overly ambitious surgeon bent on making a name for himself, but terribly out of touch with his own feelings, and those in the world around him. Through his association with Joseph, he comes to question his perception of the world, until he is quite shaken and no longer sure of himself. I can't help but think that in life, Dr. Treves was not quite so insensitive as this character. Mrs. Kendal once again has quite a featured role, and comes to have a rather close friendship with Joseph. (In case any directors happen to be reading this - I would love to play this role someday!)

The play is intended to be done in one act, and runs about two hours in length. No prosthetics or makeup at all are used for the part of Joseph. Real life photos of him are shown in slide projections near the beginning of the play, but aside from this, it's up to the actor to portray his appearance through his own posture and gestures. This is actually remarkably effective. The play was broadcast on PBS during the 1980s featuring Philip Anglim as Joseph (see the
television section). A Broadway revival was recently produced (spring 2002) which I was very disappointed to have missed. However, I finally saw a live production this fall! You can read about that adventure here (and I hope you will, or it was rather a waste of my time to make the page!)
