Kings Konged, Hawks Crowned in OT Thriller, 4-3
December 30, 2005

On paper, the championship game of the Ice Station Holiday Fest should not have been this close.  But teams have a way of rising to the occasion in big games and the Los Angeles Jr. Kings rose to the occasion in their match-up with the Santa Clara Blackhawks and nearly pulled of a huge upset when then rang a shot off the crossbar on a breakaway with just 1:45 left in regulation and the game tied 3-3.  Instead, the game went to overtime where the Blackhawks finally put it away when Nick Costa converted on a two-on-one pass across the slot from Anthony Dragotto.  The 4-3 game winner came at 2:09 of the five-minute overtime period and it capped a 4-0-1 record for Santa Clara against SCAHA competition.  The aforementioned Nick Costa and Anthony Dragotto were the heroes of the game.  Dragotto was clearly the best player on the ice today and he dominated the game with a natural hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the contest.  His pass to Costa to put the game away was right on the money, and the smart play given that Costa was approaching the net from his forehand side.

Early indications were that Santa Clara might run away with the game.  They clearly had the superior talent and that translated to a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.  On the play, Kevin Arabejo skated into the zone and then partially fanned on a slapshot.  The change-up speed fooled the goaltender and while he was able to make the save, it produced a fat rebound to the other side where Anthony Dragotto was poised to pick up the garbage.  To the Kings' credit, they kept the Hawks off the scoreboard for the rest of the period, despite being outshot 13-2.  And even better for the Kings, they converted on the second of those two shots, at 0:53 to tie the game up at 1-1.  Los Angeles' goal was of the shorthanded variety and it came on a breakaway off a Hawks' turnover in the neutral zone.

Penalties got the Blackhawks in trouble in the second period, and they were converted into two Los Angeles power play goals.  At 11:50, after a scrum in front of the Blackhawks' net, Santa Clara got stung with three minor penalties to the Kings' one and that resulted in a two-minute, 5-on-3 for the Kings.  The Hawks nearly killed it, denying the Jr. Kings for the first 1:42, but they converted when an off-target slapshot glanced off a Hawks' skater and was redirected past goaltender Devon Luna.  Los Angeles had a chance to take a two-goal lead at 5:26 on a breakaway off another giveaway, but Devon Luna stepped up and made a huge stick save.  Santa Clara then got the game back to square on Anthony Dragotto's second goal, at 4:55.  Taking a face-off win from Kevin Arabejo in the Los Angeles zone, Dragotto maneuvered left, then right, before spotting an opening and launching a canon of a slapshot that sizzled into the back of the net.  Arabejo picked up his second assist of the game on the score.  But the fired-up Kings regained the lead on another power play goal, this one also coming on a slapshot - a one-timer from the center point position at 0:56.

Heading into the final period, Santa Clara needed to outscore the Kings by two goals to pull out a tournament title.  They attacked relentlessly, outshooting the Kings in the third period, 19-4.  They got the equalizer at 9:10 when defenseman Sam Boyer took a cross-ice feed from Anthony Dragotto, and fed it down low to Nick Costa. Costa sent a centering pass slicing through the slot and Dragotto had half a net to shoot at, and he didn't miss, earning a natural hat trick in the process.  Neither team was able to get the deciding goal in regulation, though both teams had golden opportunities.  At 4:31, Devon Luna made a huge toe save on a shot that looked to be headed for the net.  He followed that up with a glovehand snag.  On the next drop of the puck, the Blackhawks sprung Jason Pacheco loose on a breakaway, but he too was denied by a great pad save down low.  The Kings will be having nightmares about their last chance to win it in regulation - a wide open breakaway at 1:45.  After ringing the potential tournament-winner off the crossbar, the Kings' skater swung his stick in frustration, breaking it in two across the post.  For the Blackhawks, it was the break they needed to possibly escape with the win, and if you give good teams a second chance, they will usually capitalize.  Santa Clara did exactly that in an overtime period that they dominated.  Anthony Dragotto took over in the OT, getting three good shots on goal that were denied. Patrick Castagna then came in on a short breakaway, but a very patient goalie outwaited Castagna and was able to make the save.  Finally, Nick Costa iced it with his top-shelf wrister at 2:09, saving the Blackhawks from a possible shootout decision that could have gone either way.

Santa Clara will take their tournament title and head back to Northern California where they return to NORCAL action on January 8th with their third and final regular season meeting with the San Jose Jr. Sharks.  Players and parents should take note that the 1/21 and 2/26 games against Tri-Valley have been rescheduled for 2/2 and 2/12.

Hawks Sting Stangs in Statbuster, 18-0
December 29, 2005

It took the Santa Clara Blackhawks just four trips up the ice and 1:25 to score four goals on Thursday, on their way to a punishing 18-0 win over the Santa Clarita Mustangs.  The victory gives the Blackhawks a 3-0-1 record in the tournament and a spot in the championship game against the 4-0-0 Los Angles Jr. Kings.  The Kings clinched their spot in the finals by virtue of their last second, 3-2 win over Santa Clarita earlier in the day.  The combination of these scores suggests that the Kings will have the hands full with the Hawks.  But just one day earlier, the Kings busted the Inland Valley Wild by a 5-2 margin, after the Hawks had only managed a 1-1 tie against that club.  Either way, the Kings plan to show up for the game and have it decided on the ice.

Today's blowout resulted in every Hawks' player getting on the scoresheet, including goaltender Devon Luna, who earned an assist on Santa Clara's only power play goal of the game.  Kevin Arabejo led the scoring brigade with six goals and three assists.  Arabejo had managed only one assist in the tournament before today and he did not even take the ice in this game until the Blackhawks had already put a four-spot on the scoreboard.   Nick Costa, Vitto Gagliardi, Jason Pacheco and Kyle Yedlicka all scored two goals in the game, with lone goals coming off the sticks of Anthony Dragotto, Kyle Nunn, Sam Boyer and Mitch Venosta.  The assist leader was Anthony Dragotto, who passed out six helpers.  In addition to Arabejo's three-assist playmaker performance, defensemen Derek Fredericks and Sam Boyer also collected three helpers apiece to compliment their gaudy +11 plus/minus performances.  Two assists were recorded by Nick Costa, Patrick Castagna, Vitto Gagliardi, Jason Pacheco, Brian Quirolo and Mitch Venosta.  The balance of the team's thirty-one assists came from Billy Kiernan, Kyle Nunn, Kyle Yedlicka, as well as the aforementioned assist by Devon Luna. Luna earned his second consecutive shutout of the tournament, stopping all ten shots he faced along the way.

Blackhawks Turn the Tide in Six-Goal Outburst
December 28, 2005

It took awhile, but the Santa Clara Blackhawks finally got their offense untracked for the Holidays, riding a hat trick off the stick of Mitch Venosta to a 6-0 victory over the Channel Islands Riptide.  The Blackhawks' Anthony Dragotto, Kyle Nunn, and Patrick Castagna also contributed lamp lighters, with a playmaker (three assists) coming from Jason Pacheco, two assists from Billy Kiernan, and lone helpers pitched in by Sam Boyer, Kevin Arabejo, Derek Fredericks and Kyle Yedlicka.

The Riptide were the third straight solid defensive club that the Hawks have faced out of Southern California and the game started in much the same fashion as their their first two games of the tournament.  Santa Clara jumped to a 1-0 lead,  but their second goal was much harder to come by than their first.  In today's game, penalties were the momentum killer.  After Mitch Venosta found the five-hole on a wrist shot just 1:39 into the contest, the  Blackhawks proceeded to pick up four minor penalties over the next 9:49.  The penalty-kill effort was stellar however, particularly during a 1:32 stretch where the Riptide had a two-man advantage. Patrick Castagna, flanked first by Billy Kiernan and Brian Quirolo, and later by Sam Boyer and Derek Fredericks, keyed the successful penalty kill.  Goaltender Devon Luna capped the effort with a glovehand snag at 7:13.  Luna stopped all seven shots he faced in the period, including another snatch and hold on a subsequent Riptide power play at 4:23.  All told, Luna stopped fourteen shots in the contest, his third straight lights-out performance of the tournament.

In the second period, Santa Clara managed to stay out of the penalty box and not surpassingly, the momentum began to swing in their favor.  But it wasn't until 4:57 that the Blackhawks were able to extend their lead, and it came on another seeing-eye wrister from Mitch Venosta.  Then, just fifty-one seconds later, Anthony Dragotto scored his first goal of the contest, a wraparound effort that extended the Blackhawks' lead to 3-0.  Devon Luna faced only three shots in the period, but two were excellent scoring chances.  At 3:55, Luna stuffed a one-timer from right in front, and then at 3:35, he snatched a rising wrister with the big chopper after a Hawks turnover in their own end.

With a little bit of a cushion to work with, the Blackhawks offense really began to click in the third period.  First Mitch Venosta capped his hat trick performance with a one-timer snapped over the goaltender's glove at 10:57. Jason Pacheco delivered the centering feed on Venosta's goal and it earned him his third assist of the contest.  Next to bury the biscuit for the Hawks was Kyle Nunn.  Rushing in to break up a Riptide skater who had just come around his own net, Nunn delivered a steal and a goal with one swing of the stick, sending the puck over the goaltender's outstretched glove at 7:46.  It was the fourth goal of the contest for the Nunn, Venosta, Pacheco line, and the trio's seventh and final point in what could have been a clean sweep of the three stars of the game.  Patrick Castagna capped the night's scoring with a rebound roof job at 5:05 that came off Kyle Yedlicka's hard shot off the pads from the right slot.  Devon Luna then nailed down his shutout with a cat-quick save on a rebound effort at 0:17.

Santa Clara next meets the Santa Clarita Mustangs, 6-1 winners over the California Golden Bears in a game played just before the Blackhawks and Riptide squared off.  With a win, the Blackhawks will move on to Friday's championship game.  A loss will mean an early trip home for the Hawks.

Blackhawks Refuse to be Tied Again
December 27, 2005

When the West Valley Wolves scored a five-on-three power play goal with 5:53 left in the game to even the score at 1-1, the Santa Clara Blackhawks had to feel like yesterday's 1-1 tie was coming back to haunt them.  But then Billy Kiernan told his teammates on the bench that "this game is not ending in a tie" and the rally cry was set.  His teammates met the challenge when Jason Pacheco slipped home his fifth game-winning goal of the year at the 3:51 mark.  Pacheco was joined on the scoresheet by Patrick Castagna (one goal and one assist), Vitto Gagliardi (one goal), Kyle Yedlicka (two assists), and Kyle Nunn (one assist).  Devon Luna was once again stellar between the pipes, gobbling up 20 of the 21 shots he faced.

This contest was scoreless through the first period.  Devon Luna came up with a nice save on a short, two-on-one at 2:30, and then added a sharp save while the Blackhawks were on a penalty kill at 1:39.  Santa Clara's best scoring chance came on a two-on-one of their own, with Kyle Yedlicka passing to Patrick Castagna.  But Castagna was denied at 0:46.

In the second period, West Valley smelled blood and they worked hard to capitalize on their energy.  But Devon Luna was up to the challenge, particularly during a frenzied attack around the net near the 7:05 mark.  Santa Clara got into penalty trouble in the period and West Valley earned a 0:37, two-man advantage at 6:28. Patrick Castagna, Billy Kiernan and Derek Fredericks took the ice and stemmed the tide, killing the first penalty and gaining a fourth skater.  Devon Luna did his part, making two saves including one that he gloved and held at 5:48.  Then, lighting struck in the form of Patrick Castagna.  A strong forecheck by Nick Costa enabled Kyle Yedlicka to get to a loose puck behind his own net.  Yedlicka fed Castagna breaking out of the zone and Castagna made nifty move in the neutral zone to get behind the defense.  Castagna marched in on the netminder and waited patiently before zipping one past him at 4:58.  Kyle Yedlicka picked up the lone assist on Castagna's shorthanded goal.  When the teams returned to even strength, Santa Clara put on more pressure, but good chances from Mitch Venosta at 4:12 and 3:50 were denied.

Holding onto a slim 1-0 lead, Santa Clara looked to earn an insurance goal in the final period.  Mitch Venosta had the best chance in the first half of the period, gaining an opening and delivering a good shot at 8:22 that was stopped.  As the minutes passed, the Blackhawks focussed on securing the slim lead that they had.  But when they committed up two minor penalties after a giveaway led to a near breakaway chance at 6:56, the door swung wide open for West Valley. Patrick Castagna, Billy Kiernan and Brian Quirolo took the ice to meet the two-minute, 3-on-5 challenge and they did a fine job, killing more that half of the penalties before the Wolves scored on a nice shot off the post at 5:53.  The Hawks killed the balance of the second penalty and then put their game faces on in an effort to regain the lead.  It took them just another 1:05 to make it happen.  The play was set into motion when Kyle Nunn dug loose a puck behind the Wolves' net and fed it out into the slot to Jason PachecoPacheco moved away from the net looking for an opening and then let a seemingly harmless wrister go that found an opening through a perfectly-timed Mitch Venosta screen right in front of the net.  The go-ahead goal came at 3:51 and Santa Clara then ran out the clock, adding an empty netter from Vitto Gagliardi at 0:08.

The Blackhawks' next contest has them pitted against the Channel Islands Riptide, another club battling for second place in SCAHA's Midget-A Division.  The Riptide shut out the Blackhawks' B team in their opener, 4-0.

Wild Hold off Hawks Down the Stretch in 1-1 Tie
December 26, 2005

The Santa Clara Blackhawks made the long trek to Southern California on the day after Christmas and found SCAHA competition ready to go toe-to-toe against NORCAL's top Midget-A squad.  The Inland Valley Wild, one of several teams mired in a second-place SCAHA logjam, delivered strong goaltending and error-free defense to escape with a 1-1 tie.  After Inland Valley tied the game at 7:55 of the third period, Santa Clara put forth an all-out effort to regain the lead.  But despite playing most of the balance of the game at the Wild end of the ice, the Hawks were unable to solve Inland Valley's netminder to gain the game winner.

Santa Clara's lone goal came early in the contest while on the power play.  After a series of back and forth passes between Kyle Yedlicka and defenseman Derek Fredericks, Yedlicka fed behind the net to Patrick Castagna. Castagna delivered a shot that was stopped, but Yedlicka managed to corral the rebound and feed it over to defenseman Sam Boyer, who twisted the twine from right in front at 9:26.  That was all that the Hawks would manage however, despite many chances along the way,  Goaltender Devon Luna allowed only one goal on fourteen shots, but that one goal not only earned the Wild a point, but it snapped Luna's even-strength scoreless streak at 207:44.  Luna was tested on only a few occasions thanks to strong defensive play in front of him.  But he did come up with game-saving rejections at 3:48 of the first period, and then again with just five seconds left in the second period after a rare defensive breakdown.

With a field of eight teams competing in the tournament, Santa Clara's needs to look at their next three games as "must wins".  Even if they go 3-0-1, they could easily find themselves in a tiebreaker situation against the Wild.  So goal differential may come into play, and if the Hawks are going to win that battle, they will need to get their offense untracked as they prepare to face off against the West Valley Wolves tomorrow.

Derek Fredericks - Solid blueline effort earned team a point after offense mustered only 1 goal
