| 1st Generation My g-g-grandfather was William Hawkins. He and his wife, Elizabeth, may have moved from West Virginia to Ohio around 1830. According to the ages of his children, William was possibly born about 1810-12, but the exact date is unknown.. The Lawrence County, Ohio, Marriage Index shows William Hawkins and Elizabeth Halterman were married 03 May 1832 (Book 158) Books 1, 2, 3: 1817-1843. They may have been living in Scioto County at this time, but their specific residence is unknown.. The children of William and Elizabeth, beginning with their oldest - included: 1. Caroline, (b. 24 Nov 1829) in West Virginia. 2. Charles Wesley, He was b. 23 Feb., 1836, in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio; and d. 25 Sept., 1910, Franklin County, Missouri). --- (The author of this website is the g-grandson of Charles Wesley). 3. Charitan 4. John 5. Moses 6. Arminda 7. Elizabeth 8. Joseph. Another genealogist, Millie R., who is related to (1) Caroline - writes: "My great-great grandmother was Caroline (Hawkins) Stephens (b. 24 Nov 1829) born in West Virginia; Caroline married William Stephens (b. 16 Dec. 1828) on 30 Jan 1849 in Scioto County, Ohio. I believe her father was William Hawkins. In the 1850 census for Jackson County, Ohio, Millie stated that she found William Hawkins with wife Elizabeth (possible maiden name of Halterman, or a name sounding like this) and their children (as listed above)." In the 1870 Federal Census for Harrison Township, Scioto County, William and Caroline Stephens are living next door to Wesley and Hannah Hawkins. Millie said: It seems to close to be a coincidence. A further tie is that Nancy Clark Stephens, William Stephen's mother, is shown in Wesley's household with the notation that she is "living with her son." (This is confusing, but probably meant she was only visiting Wesley's household and was living next door with her son). Both Hawkins / Stephens families lived in corner of Scioto County that borders Jackson County (Ohio) and the census show that they moved back and forth between these two counties." Another family researcher, Becky M. writes: Wesley and Hannah are in listed in the 1870 Ohio Census, in Harrison Township, Scioto County, with children: William, Mary C., John, and Nancy E. They are listed in the same census with William and Caroline Stephens and Will's mother, Nancy Stephens, age 63 and widowed. (This was also Hannah's mother). Interestingly, but not unusual, the census taker incorrectly recorded the family name as "Hockins.") |

| Introduction Hawkins Of Ohio is a website designed to assist one of many Hawkins families to find their roots! William Hawkins was our g-g-grandfather. Some unconfirmed records indicate that he and his family, or his parents, may have moved from the West Virginia area to Ohio. (Ohio had just become a state in 1803). William's middle name is unknown, but the information below provides the names of his wife, his children, and his descendants. This writer's father, William Burrell Hawkins (1904-1982), shared some of this information with his family, and he told us our ancestor's had lived in Ohio before they moved to Franklin County, Missouri. He also said, though he did not know the details, that his paternal great-great grandparents came to America from England, or Ireland, and that his great-great grandmother came from Holland. We have not found any records to confirm this. This writer would especially like to discover our ancestry., and learn more about my great-great grandfather, William Hawkins, and his family, including his birthplace, his parents, and his place of burial. My search continues for my roots! |
