Charles Wesley and Hannah Sidney (Stephens) Hawkins

Charles Wesley, the son of William and Elizabeth Hawkins, was born in Portsmouth, (Scioto County) Ohio, on 23 Feb., 1836.

On 1 Jan., 1860, Charles Wesley was married to Hannah Sidney Stephens, who was born on 22 Nov., 1839, in Ohio, the daughter of Thomas and Nancy (Clark) Stephns. (Thomas Stephens was born in New Jersey, and Nancy in Virginia).

Charles Wesley died on 25 Sept., 1910 of apoplexy. Both Charles Wesley and Hannah are buried at Fairview Cemetery, in Franklin County, Missouri, near the town of Grubville, Missouri.

Charles Wesley, (almost all known records list him only as "Wesley") was drafted into the Union Army, the 36th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry on 9 Oct., 1862, (this Regiment was organized at Marietta, Ohio, on about July 30 to Aug., 1861) and he was mustered out on 18 July, 1863, on expiration of service, with an honorable discharge, at Elk River, Tennessee. He was listed as being six feet tall, having a dark complexion, dark eyes and black hair.

Wesley was part of Company K, and at least two battles that he was a part of included: Tullahoma Campaign, Tennessee, June 23-30, 1863; and Hoover;s Gap, Tennessee, June 24, 1863. One of the Colonels of Wesley's troop was George Crook, who gained fame later in history, in the Indian wars out West, as the man who captured Geronimo, and George Crook was promoted to a Brig. General on 7 Sept, 1862.

Wesley and Hannah are listed in the 1880 Missouri Soundex Census in Franklin County, Missouri, so apparently the family moved from Ohio to Missouri between the 1870 Ohio Census and 1880.

The family is listed with children: William H., age 19, born in Ohio; Mary C., age 17, born in Ohio; John Jacob, age 11, born in Ohio; Nancy Elizabeth, age 8, born in Ohio; Patrick M., age 4, born in Missouri; and Edward C., age 1, born in Missouri.

Researcher Becky M. writes: Wesley's pension information gave information such as his occupation: a cooper (a person who made barrels and containers), and it told what he looked like, where he mustered in the service, what unit he was in, and he had two character references in his files: one from Hannah's brother, John Stevens, who lived in Topeka, Kansas, at the time of the affidavit, in 1910, age 76 years. The other affidavit was by David Lewis.

The photo below was provided by my cousin, Becky M. and it is reportedly the home of Wesley and Hannah Hawkins, and was located in Franklin County, MO, near the small town of Grubville, which is now part of Jefferson County, MO.

There's four persons on the front porch of the home, and the lady on the right side appears to be Hannah Hawkins.

Note this is a two story house with additional rooms on the back side.

We can only guess that the photo was taken during the late 1800's or the early 1900's, since Grandfather Wesley died 25 Sept. 1910.
