What is HRV?

The purpose of the Club is the promotion and enjoyment of the working Rottweiler, primarily through Schutzhund training. The Club is strictly a non-profit organizations (donations are tax deductible), and is affiliated with the United States Rottweiler Club. Club trainers receive no payment of any kind. Operational costs are met by dues and assessments equally shared by all members. Visitors are always welcome. If you'd like to check out our club, just send HRV an E-mail.

It's been heard here in Hawaii that people think our USRC Schutzhund club, is an attack dog club. Talk such as this shows that the person/persons know nothing of this sport! For one we are not an ATTACK DOG club. We require that all members participate in the sport in all phases or they are allowed to only participate in the obedience portion, period. We do not accept, nor try to train dogs with incorrect temperaments, such as extreme over aggression, or fear biters. Members of this club have traveled all over the world learning about this sport and training with the best possible trainers anywhere, such as Dean Calderon, Ron Gordon, Martin Vollrath, etc. We have no control problems with our dogs and pictures have been provided in our Photo Album to show their even temperament with children, etc. We invite anyone who is unknowledgeable about this sport to come, watch and learn. It's a team sport.  Both the handlers and the dog's love it.

HISTORY OF HRV

Hawaii had no representation of the German Rottweiler. Daylynn Kyles conceived the idea of creating a group of Rottweiler enthusiasts who wanted their own shows and their own judges. She particularly wanted shows in which the judge was one for Rottweilers and not, say, a Cocker Spaniel judge. A small group of Rottweiler enthusiasts got together to start training their dogs in the sport of Schutzhund. This small group consisted of Jason Wiggins, Tom Morell, and Daylynn Kyles. As they began wanting their own trials so that they may title their dogs. Their group grew to include Susan Manuma, Matt Manuma, and Matasaua Epenesa. With the effort of these 5 individuals, a club was formed. In 1998, Hawaii Rottweiler Verein was born.

In January of 1999, HRV had its first sanctioned show with then Apprentice judge Lucy Ang. The show was met with resounding success. Many people enjoyed themselves and the club started growing. Since then, HRV has had a trial with Bill Fields, a seminar with Dean Calderon, visits by Ron Gordon, and a seminar by Gary Park. In March, 2000, HRV hosted their first annual Sanctioned Show with judge Erich Koenigsburger. The show was met with spectacular success with more surely to follow!

THE PRESENT HRV

Today the HRV has grown to over 30 members. Now, that original group of 5 HRV members has formed a ARV sanctioned club, the Working Rottweilers of Hawaii. The WROH, with Vrinda Graham (WROH President) and Charles Sloan (WROH Vice President), has had its first sanctioned show on November 18 and 19, 2000 with Eckart Salquist as judge. WROH has over 30 members as well. Members from the two clubs meet weekly to train their dogs. As a result HRV dogs are getting titled in the sport. Approximately twelve dogs have received their BH's, a few going on to get their SchH I titles, as well as a BST title for one dog.

THE FUTURE HRV

HRV members are excited about their club. It is the goal of HRV to become the largest breed specific club in Hawaii. HRV's goal is to influence the Rottweiler breed to return back to what it was originally intended to do (a working dog rather than a beauty). Members are looking forward to more sanctioned shows, more titled dogs, and more Breed Testing prior to the breeding of a Rottweiler.

HRV's VIEW ON BREEDING

Breedings should only take place when dogs meet the FCI standard and have deemed themselves breedable by passing all health clearances and obtaining a BST or ZtP. USRC promotes USRC registered litters which requires all of the above requirements. It is the motto of the HRV that if you don't rescue, you shouldn't be breeding!

HRV's VIEW ON USRC

USRC is an awesome organization with very knowledgeable and friendly people. The USRC will go far, and grow to unbelievable measures in the next 10 years.

HRV's VIEW ON SHOWS

The general opinion of HRV club members feel that the opinion of the Rottweiler Breeder enthusiast is very much more a valid opinion that that of a breeder of a different breed, judging our dogs. For many HRV members, they show in both AKC and German style shows, and that's approved within HRV. For many members, AKC shows just offers no enjoyment on part of both the dog and the owners.

HRV's VIEW ON SCHUTZHUND

The sport of Schutzhund is greatly misunderstood. If anyone (and everyone is encouraged) to come out and see these dogs in action or participate in the sport, they'd see the dogs eyes light up with enjoyment. The dogs butts are wagging with excitement that only can come from doing something the Rottweiler is natural at doing. These dogs were bred to work and work they should! The Rottweiler is not a couch potato, or made to have the temperament of a Labrador. If people want a Rottweiler to have these personality traits, they shouldn't ruin the Rottweiler breed. They should own another breed for suitable to their wants and needs.

HRV's VIEW ON RESCUE

Rescue is long overdue in Hawaii. HRV is the ONLY organization that does Rottweiler rescue here and as far as we can tell, we are the only organization that does any rescue at all.
