...
Where do movies come from? Gosh, if I only knew. I usually find some kind of image hanging out inside of my head that I latch onto. From there, it's time to strap in and hold on.

Image: A lone wallet lies inn the middle of a city of shining golden buildings. It draws the attention of joe regular, who picks it up with the best of intentions, but ends up all tangled up in a web of corruption.

False start: The story was originally super-heros. The protagonist was originally going to run across the city's costumed protectors, who weren't quite as straight-up good as he originally thought. The idea was to have the whole thing be in black and white, or at least a very muted color scheme, except for the super-heros and villans who would radiate bright, vibrant colors.
I ditched it because there was no plausible way I could make that movie with the resources I had.

Evolution: I lost the super-hero idea, and threw in a plot point revolving around trying to find a name like Smith in the phone book. Somehow a magic, time-traveling phone booth slipped in there (originally I was going to use old Bill and Ted footage mixed into that section) and I ended up with a kind of crazy cartoon-noir.

Final Pitch: Take a bunch of iconic plot devises, throw in a confused protagonist, a healthy dose of mystery and time-travel, mix well.
