What is Network?
A network is a collection of computers and mobile devices connected together via communications devices and transmission media, often wirelessly allowing computers to share resources (hardware, software, data & information).

COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE

TRANSMISSION MEDIA

Definition:-
Hardware component that enables a computer to sent (transmit) and receive data, instructions, and information to and from one or more computers.

Definition:-
It describes the type of physical system used to carry a communication signal from one system to another.

Types of transmission media:-

  • Physical or wired or guided transmission media: send signals through cable, wire or tangible materials.
  • Wireless or unguided transmission media: send signal through air or space.

Wireless Access Point
A device on a network that connects wireless devices to that network.

Physical or wired or guided transmission media:

Twisted-pair Cable
A networking cable consisting of wire strands twisted in sets of two and bound into a cable.

Hub
The device that provides a common central connection point for nodes on network.

Physical or wired or guided transmission media:

Coaxial cable
A networking cable consisting of center wire inside a grounded, cylindrical shield, capable of sending data at high speeds.

Network Interface Cards (NIC)/ Network Card
An adapter/ expansion card that connect a computer to network.

Wireless network Interface Card:
An expansion cards through which a computer can connect to a network that provides wireless data transmission.

Physical or wired or guided transmission media:

Fiber-Optic Cable
A networking cable that utilizes hundreds of thin transparent fibers over which lasers transmits data as light.

Modem
A device that enables a computer to communicate over analog networking media such as connecting the Internet via telephone lines.

Wireless modem:
Modem that connects to the serial port but does not connect to telephone lines. It receive through the air.

Wireless or unguided transmission media:

Infrared
Send signals using infrared light waves from one device to another.

Router
A device that connects multiple networks together; routes packets to their next location in order to efficiently reach their destination.

Wireless or unguided transmission media:

Microwaves
Radio waves that provide a high-speed signal transmission using electromagnetic radio wave. (P1 WiMax)

Repeater
A device that enhance the weaken signal and repeat it at its original strength.

Wireless or unguided transmission media:

Cellular Radio
Is a form of broadcast radio that is in wide use for mobile communication.
