| Released in 1997 in Canada (1st pic on right), and in 1998 in America by Nettwerk Records with an alternative cover art (2nd pic). THANKYOU STEPHANIE + WILLARD Just as Affliction was their ticket to acceptance in Canada, The Devil You Know was the release that launched Econoline Crush into the international spotlight. There is a definite shift in lyrical subject matter again from Affliction. Songs on TDYK are more focused on personal relationships (Home, Hollowman and Elegant to name a few). Trevor Hurst's new vein of songwriting vastly improved the "accessibility" of the songs to the listeners he was targeting and this would do well to explain the popularity of TDYK worldwide. Musically, the band had gone through a host of member changes by this point and the new sound that results (more as a result of absence rather than arrival it must be said) is quite different from Affliction. Less emphasis was put electronically-speaking on the "industrial" element of the music. Songs like Surefire and Sparkle and Shine show off Ziggy and Robbie Morfitt's guitar work rather than electronic effects. This cd remains my favourite Econoline Crush work, and for now I still believe that this cd is the best released ever. |
