Sample Program Outline
1 hour 30 minute Program / 3 hour Extended Program
1.  Introduction to Beginning the Journey (10 min.)

2.  "Guidelines for a Safe Environment"  (5 min.)
          So that participants can all feel comforable sharing opinions, thoughts, and
          feelings.

3.  "Progression of Hate" Interactive Activity with 5 volunteers (10 min.)
          Participants see how hate grows.

4.
(Extended Program) "Creating a Common Language" Jeopardy Game
          So that participants communicate effectively to each other in discussions.

5.  Introduction of Documentary (5 min.)

6.  Viewing of Documentary to show the effects/history of hate (30 min.).

7.  Discussion on the roots of hate (5 min.)

8.  "Crossing the Line" Interactive activity with entire small group (
up to
          100 participants
) to demonstrate that all peole have felt the effects of hate
          (10-15 min.).

(Extended) Discussion of Hate Speech.  View "Judy Shepard Public Service
          Announcement."  Group brainstorming of hate speech examples to see impact
          of words.  (10-15 min.).

10. 
(Extended) "What I Don't Want to Hear" Group Activity to encourage small
          group discussion on "target" groups (20-30 min.).

11.  Discussion on what can be done so that participants know how they can make a
          difference (10-15 min.).

11.  Call to action and closing (10 min.).

12.  Fill out evalutions and distribute resources.
Please note that this is a sample program outline.  Beginning the Journey uses several different documentaries in different programs.  The Program Outline is adjustable based on what the host agency desires its message to be and what topics they want addressed.  Beginning the Journey's programs are flexible to meet your needs and to help your organization begin the discussion regarding diversity.
