May 31 – The Visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary

(Feast)

Antiphons at Lauds - Psalms of Sunday of the 1st week

1. Mary rose and hastened to the hills, in a town of Judaea.

2. When Elizabeth heard Mary greeting her, her child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was full of the Holy Spirit.

3. Blessed are you, Mary, for you have believed that all that was told to you by the Lord will be fulfilled.

Short Lesson

Joel 2, 27-3, 1

You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy.

First Lesson

The Reading is from the Canticle of Canticles

The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, there he stands behind our wall, gazing in at the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me: "Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the covert of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely. Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If one offered for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly scorned."
