The information on this site has been collected by Dr. Phil Kirby living in the UK and Charles Courlander on mainland Europe.

Our great keenness is to trace our family history as far as is possible and touch a bit of the richness that is the Kirby/Courlander heritage. Maybe we share some of that heritage? We'd love to know if we do.

So far, we've followed the trace of the Kirby and Courlander line from those of us now living and discovered a common heritage linked to the Hart and Solomon line.

Introduction:

The history of the Hart and Solomon families has its origins in the movement of Jewish families from Germany and Holland during the 1700s and earlier to Eastern Europe and later England. Some of the families moved even further afield to countries including the USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. The reasons for these movements have already been identified by historians but were mainly due to persecution and economic circumstances. We are also aware that the surnames of the various families are not their original names but were adopted for many reasons. Research into the origins of the various surnames is include in the website. These key areas will be revisited during this website information and also updated as new information is discovered.

We have included where possible photographs and maps to show where the families originated and settled. In the majority of cases the families settled in London. Our earliest records show that the Hart and Solomon families were living and working in London from the late 1700s.Their occupations included boot and shoe manufacturers, cigar makers, various different types of merchant traders, jewellers and also dentists.

Wherever possible we have included the sources of our information particularly the various British census details from 1841-1901 and documents including the GRO birth, marriage and death certificates, wills and naturalisation papers. This is to ensure that our family history can be researched further and also to base our information upon factual details.

The specific families we are related to are numerous but include:

Crawcour/Wulfson/Phillips/Jacobson/Myers/Courlander( real name Schactnowitz)/Cohen. A full list of the names are included in the website together with the family trees.
