�No. Well, still no. Denby was a skel. He was off the job. Had been since about eight months ago when he got involved with my partner�s ex-husband, who was muling for some Dominican gang.�

�Diane, how do you feel about Harry Denby?�

�I can�t stand him. Couldn�t stand him. Almost from the start he played these mind games with me. He made me feel really stupid a couple of times.� Diane shook her head, laughing in a rueful tone.

�What kind of mind games?�

�He pretended to come on to me. The first time we went out, he drank like a fish and tried to get me to drink with him, even though he already knew I was recovering. When that didn�t work, he wouldn�t give me information about my partner unless I kissed him.�

�Did you?�

�Yes. Twice. First, on the cheek, then he upped the ante and wanted a kiss on the mouth.�

�How was it?�

�Disgusting. He tasted of scotch,� Diane looked at the plants on Dr. Hubley�s desk. As she rubbed her aching neck harder, she thought they could use some water.

�Did you find yourself attracted to him?�

Diane studied the books on Dr. Hubley�s shelf, and she felt her eyes traveling to every point in the room except to Dr. Hubley�s face.

�Diane?�

�Uh. What? What was the question?� Diane�s cheeks felt hot. She shrugged off her coat, then folded it quickly and laid it on the couch beside her. Finally, she looked at Dr. Hubley, whose expression was suddenly readable: patience and sympathy. Diane looked down and took a bracing breath. �Okay. Yeah. Yeah, I was attracted to him. But only on a visceral level. He was completely wrong for me.�

�Um hmm. And how did you feel about him the next time you saw him?�

�Angry. Really angry. He had just lost a skel he was guarding, and he came to me for help in recovering him quietly, under the table. He talked to me like we�d just had some kind of date and didn�t hit it off. He apologized for his behavior, and I didn�t accept it.�
