Harrow District celebrated its 70th birthday in style on the 20/21st September of this year in style with a spectacular camp held at are usual site in Ruislip, West London. A large number of Woodcrafters turned up including some from other districts such as New Barnet, Luton and Hemel which added to the party atmosphere present throughout the weekend. A bouncy castle was hired for the elfins and pioneers which proved a highlight for many-shame the DF's couldn't use it!
In addition to this and the usual camp fire and games, on the Saturday night the Venturers led by Ken set up a spectacular walk through the woods for the younger members of the district based on Woodcraft's Native American history which drew on all the senses and wowed captive audiences.
The camp would not have been possible without, as always, the huge effort from all the Kinsfolk in the district but it was well worth it. Role on the 80th anniversary :)
As many of you may have read in the latest edition of 'Woodcraft World' Harrow has successfully set up a new group within the district. Woodchips is for kids aged between 0-5 and precedes elfins. The initiation of the woodchips was aided by a successful grant application of over £1000 which has enabled promotional material for local schools and libraries to be professionally printed and premises to be secured.
Although the core of the group will at present be leaders children the district is eagerly awaiting the addition of new members looking for something different and meaningful for their children to attend so watch this space... For further information click here.
For over two years now Harrow Venturers have been using the same hall in Harrow-Weald for there group nights every Monday. However, recent developments have meant that the hall perfectly apt for hosting youth groups is to be knocked down in place of housing developments in the form of flats. Despite petitions and voiced opposition to the plans from all quarters of those who use the hall the council were unmoved and the hall will be knocked down within the year.
However, another local building is being renovated to replace the hall yet it will be far less suitable for the use of youth groups as there is no outside playground for sports which is a particular blow to such an active group. Nevertheless this development will not close the group and we will continue to practice the teachings of woodcraft just in a new setting.
Jane and Ken are currently in discussion about a Halloween party but this is yet to be fully co-ordinated so if you have any ideas or are prepared to help leave a message on the Venturer Guest book and the message can be passed on to them. Again watch this space...
