                                                                Summary

In Feudal Japan, an era nearly 500 years ago where youkai (demon) and humans live, there's a hanyou (half-demon) named Inuyasha.  In the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Era) being a hanyou meant being looked down upon by humans as well as youkai.  Inuyasha heard about the Shikon no Tama (Four Souls Jewel), a jewel with powers to grant any wish.  Inuyasha intended to use the Shikon no Tama to turn himself into a full demon.  But the jewel was protected by a miko (priestess) named Kikyou, who possessed a considerable amount of power. Inuyasha stole the jewel and Kikyou shot him with a purified arrow, which permanantly sealed him to the Goshinboku (God Tree) in a half dead state.  Kikyou later died of a fatal wound she recieved from Inuyasha in the fight to regain the jewel, which was placed upon her pyre and buried with her.

500 years later, a girl named Kagome, Kikyou's reincarnation, was pulled into the Honekoi no Ido (Bone-eaters well) by a youkai and into Sengoku Jidai. There she met Inuyasha, who had been sealed to the Goshinboku for 50 years.  He told her that if she would release him he would save her from the youkai who was chasing her .  She later finds out that the youkai was after the Shikon no Tama, which was inside her.
After killing the youkai, Inuyasha demands that Kagome hand over the jewel to him, and she refuses.  Later a crow youkai
steals the Shikon no Tama and flies off.  To retrieve the jewel, Kagome shoots the youkai with an arrow, missing and
destroying the Shikon no Tama in the process.  The jewel   shattered, spreading throughout the world.  Kagome and
Inuyasha must now travel to gather the Shikon no Kakera (Shards of Shikon) before the jewel can fall into the
hands of an evil youkai.  And so their journey begins....
