| Just when you thought Tokyo had to be the ugliest city in the world, then there is Osaka. Osakans talk louder, wear brighter colors, speak a different language, and walk on the opposite side of the street. Osakans have loud arguments with store clerks over prices, which is considered very un-Japanese by Tokyoans. In the Osaka culture, strangers commonly demand that you accept a gesture of kindness from them (food, drinks), or else they will hit you. If you're confused by why there are so many tigers in Osaka, and everything seems to be colored in yellow and black, it's the mascot for the local baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. Osakans marry in yellow-and-black wedding dresses. Osaka has various civil engineering disasters, including a new airport built on an artificial island that is sinking into the sea. The airport terminal has a crooked roof, which is probably by design, but nobody is too sure. The world's first sports stadium with a movable roof was built there in 2000, but the roof stopped working 5 years ago because the company that made it went bankrupt. When audiences jump up and down during rock concerts there, it causes earthquakes in the neighborhood because of the landfill it was built on. Osaka was the economic and cultural capital of Japan until the 19th century, but today's Osakans have throughly accepted their second-class status. |
