The Rift

My suspicions are strong

That he knows he's wrong

Why can he not meet my gaze?

I look up suddenly, he's watching with eyes glazed

Gazes lock and fall away

Everything so bleak and grey.

Pride does not permit me to even peer secretly

But why does he avoid my eyes, is he guilty?

He runs like a fugitive from me

But there's more to this than the eye can see.

I know, it's not his courage at fault

But conscience which falters

Like a child who ate all the cookies from the plate

And knowing he did wrong, runs into hiding when he thinks he'll get caught

Will I have to catch him?

Will he confess at my whim?

But pride again restrains me from rebuilding that bridge

Which his deceit made into an insurmountable ridge

He will have to take the initiative and walk that first step towards me

So that I can tell him- all's forgiven and everything's back to 'we'.
