Background

In the course of six years of study at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, Hanno Strydom developed a passionate interest in teaching. Recognition of his analytical and pedagogical abilities by Professor Steven Doane led to his appointment as Professor Doane’s studio Teaching Assistant during his graduate studies. This position afforded him an opportunity to continue refining his own understanding of string technique, immersed in Professor Doane’s acclaimed teaching methods, while working with highly gifted young cellists from around the world.

Philosophy

Through his teaching Mr. Strydom aims to nurture in each student an appreciation and enthusiasm for music and the cello. He welcomes students of all levels, whether aspiring professionals or those simply seeking personal growth and enjoyment through music, recognizing the significant contribution of music education to the development of such skills as self-discipline, self-confidence, and long-term goal attainment.

In working with each student to uniquely address his or her individual goals, Mr. Strydom maintains a commitment to providing a foundational technical training of the highest standard. Regardless of the specific material being studied, the principal focus is on clarifying the fundamentals of cello playing. Lesson time is also used to address important elements of music theory, and to become acquainted with the world of the cello, its repertoire, and great cellists past and present.

Teaching in Minneapolis-Saint Paul

In July 2008 Mr. Strydom relocated to Saint Paul, Minnesota. He previously lived in both New York and Texas, where he recruited thriving classes, teaching at his private studio, at students' homes, through private lesson providers, and as an approved instructor for several Texas school districts. He now teaches extensively in the Twin Cities.
