Hunter Creek Trail Sat. 3/29/03
This trail west of Reno is one of my favorite trails to hike at the spare of the moment. To get to the trail, you go west 1 & 1/4 mile on Mayberry Dr. off of West McCarran Blvd. Turn left at Plateau Rd at Juniper Ridge and go up hill for a mile to Woodchuck Ct. Turn right and you're at the Steamboat Ditch. You can park just over the bridge on the right side.
Hunter Creek Canyon is in the Mt. Rose Wilderness area in the foothills of Mt. Rose on the north side. To get to the trail you follow the Steamboat Ditch trail west for a half mile till you get to Hunter Creek. The Steamboat Ditch Trail is another favorite of mine. It travels along the ditch for over 20 miles in the Reno area. It is flat going through canyons and around hills with great views of Reno and the area.. It's perfect for running and biking, but that's another story.
When you get to Hunter Creek, go left (south) and cross over the ditch and head up the creek on the left side. This trail goes for about a 1/4 mile till you get to a service road for the power company.
The service road crosses through the creek. Just left of the service road is a plank that you can cross over the creek to get back on the service road.
