Lao Zi(老子) was born in 571 BC in the state of Chu during the
Western Chou dynasty. He was a librarian in the imperial archives of King
Wu. He believed that establishing a set of rigid rules to curb errant human
behaviors would only encourage offenders to bend these rules and avoid
punishment. When the Kingdom of Chu fell into chaos, Lao Zi left Luoyang. As
he reached Han Gu pass, the guard, Lin Yinxi, stopped him from leaving and
implored him to put all his teachings in writing. Only after he had finished
the book was Lao Zi allowed to leave. Thereafter, his whereabouts remain a
mystery.
