Scene
1
This is a very important scene because Polonius asks Reynaldo to leave and find out the bad things that his son, laertes, does while he is away giving you the impression that he is a nosey little old man who spies on other people too besides his son. Then Ophelia enters and tell her father that she thinks Hamlet really was in love with her and now is angry and crazy because she rejected him based on her father's wish because of his observation, another clue that he is a nosey old man and that he could be wrong about spying on people. Scene 2 Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are asked to speak with Hamlet by Claudius and Gertrude and being good friends with Hamlet agree to do so for his well being, but don't know what the intentions of Claudius really are. Polonius also states in this chapter, "If circumstances lead me, I will find." This quote leads you to believe he will spy again on Hamlet and later does. Hamlet also seems to ponder about suicide and if it would be better if he was dead. At the completion of the scene the players arrive and Hamlet begins his plot with the players to find out the truth about his fathers suspected murdered, Claudius. |
