How to make a Stake Barrier
Just starting the new chainmail game I came across the problem of a lack of scenery. Two pieces come with each faction set (four with the starter set) but I wanted more than one stake barrier the next time I faced down Matt's Minotaur Cultist (see notes on the last battle here). So I decided to make my own 3D terrain.

I started with Sculpey polymer clay. I made a small base the same size as the dirt part on the row of stakes card. Then I baked my base at 275 degrees for about 7-10 minutes. Then I took a number of plastic spruces and whitled them down into stakes. Then I took two larger spruces and J-B welded them to the base to act as the board at the bottom. Using more Sculpey and superglue I attached the 17 stakes to the base. To give the model more stability I took a number of plastic base spruces and cut them into supports which were then superglued across 3 stakes each.

The paint job was very simple. I painted the whole thing burnt umber. After it dried I flocked the dirt part with simple river sand. Realizing I wanted a bigger base for the model led to cutting a piece of hard cardboard stock, J-B welding the base to it, and using green flock to cover it. As a finish I added some trail tan paint to the tips of the stakes and end of the supports to give the cut look.

The result was a nice little surprise for Matt's Cultist. Hopefully after next game I can add some bloodstains to a stake or two.
