I was happy for the opportunity to see multiple shows again. It gives the post-show withdrawl less of a kick. Karen accompanied me, much to Vics relief he doesnt consider Sunflower a good chaperone for me and rightfully so!
We had arranged to meet Columbine and share a hotel room for the NYC and Boston shows. Nice to be roadtripping with her again we had sort of mini-roadtripped together the last time through. The traffic getting to the Holland Tunnel was absolutely ridiculous. One of these days I am going to have the sense to get EZPass. Hopefully the sense will enter my brain before we leave for NFLD.
We finally got there I got lost once again on my way out of the tunnel, but lost in a different direction than the last time. Luckily, getting lost in Manhattan doesnt scare me. After all, its only so wide and sooner youll run into some street you know. We got back on the track and saw Columbine, Michele in LI and Lynda in line as we passed to go to our favorite parking lot-the one near the stage door. *evil grin * Big burly security guards stood outside the otherwise undetectable stage door. Duh! If they hadnt been there, no one would know!
Columbine had been the first in line! Good for her! Some PMB fans lined up behind us and then more GBS fans. We saw Cheryl and Howard a little later. The tix had said 5 PM doors but the doors were 6:30. Had fun being in the front of the line for a change.
We got spots right up front stage San/Bob. Karen was hoping San was in a better photo frame of mind than in Philly. He is so intense when he looks at the audience. Unlike Alan, who catches your eye, smiles and moves on to the next person, San seems to catch your eye, peer into your soul and poke around a bit in the dark corners there, then move on to the next victim. His stare can be very disconcerting.
We met the innocent Jean Marie from NYC. She fit right in with us decadent ones, believe me. As she readily admitted, the innocent look is deceiving. Donna reintroduced herself from March when we were both stage Bob. It was good to see her again! Jean Marie was uncertain that she wanted to be right up front but I think at some point we pushed her that way. I dont think she regretted it one bit either. She is short and needed to be in front of us taller people. Thank God they had a different movie playing this time around. We had a ball playing Mystery Science Theater to what I think was The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Everyone in the audience got into it! We were doing the Jaws theme when the Creature came into her room, making all sorts of Leave It To Beaver comments during the 50s-type commercials. We had so much fun, everyone groaned when the screen went up for the Spin Doctors.
It was my first time seeing the Spin Doctors. I was pretty much ignoring radio when they were popular so Karen had to explain to me that I would know one of the songs Two Princes(?). I did sort of recognize it when they played it later in the show. They are putting out a new album and at some point the lead singer wondered aloud if they should do this because they had been living off the royalties from the hit record all this time. I wish GBS could have that success down here, but not be one-hit wonders.
The lead singer must take Yoga classes because he was really limber. I thought he was going to kick one of the speakers off the stage a couple times, doing his dance moves. He was very entertaining and knew how to work a crowd, especially a crowd that was not necessarily there to see him. It was definitely a GBS crowd despite GBS not being the headliners. He made one big mistake, though, and challenged this GBS audience to a singing contest. Bad move. We matched him and did it in harmony. LOL! He had to politely get out of his promise that one of us could sing lead in the band if we could sing exactly what he sang. Ha! GBS fans rule! I did enjoy the Spin Doctors despite the fact I could not understand most of the words he sang. The bass player had this funky rainbow colored guitar with Sponge Bob, a Smurf and another little stuffed animal on the strap. The drummer played barefoot, and the lead guitarist looked like he should be in the Grateful Dead. LOL! What a combination! |
