GBS at the Troc Philly 2004
Everyone but Murray and San moved to the back of the stage and San began the chords to John Barbour. Mmmmm, mmmmm. It was sung nice and strong by San, and he changed the words a bit this evening. Will you marry my daughter Jane and take her by the hand. And will you marry my daughter Jane and take charge of all my lands. But he was consistent and sang John Barbours reply the same way so maybe we wouldnt notice. Heh. Now I have to say that the drums on that song were exquisite. Absolutely added so much to the rendering of it. Thank you Kris. I am so enjoying your being a member of the GSB family. Since they have tomorrow off, Alan was wondering if anyone knew some magazines stores that were open late. We are big readers. Theres no reason for restraint after the show, we have a day off and tonight will be Consequence Free. And I sang with wild abandon. Id like to be consequence free.
Mari Mac came ablazing after. I have not heard that last verse sung quite so fast for a long while. By the end of the song, everyone up on stage was just pounding, sawing, banging away at top speed. I cant believe they still have that much energy at the end of a set! My bittersweet moment of the evening came when I heard the Morse Code. * sigh* My favorite GBS song is the closer. Alan got us to sing the chorus twice, Bob played something longer in the accordion section, it was a nice way to cap off the set. They left a screaming stomping crowd clapping for more. The Great Big Sea chant last just a little while, but there was no mistaking our intentions with all the clapping and whooping and stomping of feet. It seemed like an eternity till they came out. And then it was only Alan. Those worried about his voice neednt be. I cant believe how many songs they did tonight and all the chatting and he still came out and did a solo. Boston and St. Johns was sung sweetly, as only Alan can
And then they all bounded back for Excursion. Excursion was sung with gusto, all of us doing the obligatory arm raising at Hey. I missed Bobs harmony on this one, but Murray was in great voice. He was in great voice all night in fact and is starting to banter back with Sean and Alan. Nice to see him enjoy the bys. They enjoy his being there, too. Feller came right after, a blazing version of that, too. This gets better every time I hear it. I wish theyd sing all the verses to it though. They could still do all the other stuff afterwards. Its such a great song to only do one verse.
Second Encore arrived without the lengthy stomping and clapping. Only a little persuaded them to come out. Old Black Rum started us off and the audience took over for a while. Its so much fun watching Bobs reactions to this song. He likes it (of course he does, he wrote it!) but even more, he seems to get delight in seeing how much WE enjoy it. Rant and Roar closed the evening and for a brief moment, we were all Newfoundlanders in the Trocadero, transported beyond seas and mountains, feeling connected with each other, swaying with the music and singing with the bys on stage. All was well. Thanks bys, I needed that. Come back soon.
We finally got Alan to notice the cups on stage after Rant and Roar and he took his back with him. I dont think the others did, and Danny didnt either. I know that Kriss or Murrays ended up in the Pushstars van. I hope they eventually get them. That was my disappointment for the evening. Disappointment didnt last long. I had to go to the merchandise table to pick up some presents for my street teamers who worked so hard. Kalem is nice (and yes, hairy) and I ended up buying another shirt and a poster. Only $5 for the poster and its such a yummy photo! I wished I had had enough money for the hoodie but not this time. There were an awful lot of people buying merchandise after the show. Hope the bys made a bundle.
