Well, I thought Washington, DC loved Great Big Sea. They cant hold a candle to the Buffalo crowd in Lafayette Square, Thursday August 11th. The largest crowd ever to see GBS in Buffalo showed up on the hot summer evening. When I got there at 6:00, Stand was in the middle of their set and there was little room for anyone else to squeeze in to see. They were a bit too intense for me. I cant say that I enjoyed too much of what I heard. Hard-edged rock does not make me a happy camper. Lynda was probably in her prime listening to them.
Plus, I was anxious to have GBS come out as itd be my second GBS show in a whole year. We are really quite spoiled here in the Northeastern United States. Many cities are in what I would consider driving range and I take full advantage of that when I can. That usually means 4-5 shows per East Coast tour for me. Buffalo is almost my outer limit where GBS roadtrips are concerned, although 11 hours to Asheville, North Carolina was so worth the trip, Id do it again in a heartbeat! For various reasons, I wouldnt get to Gananoque or New Haven this time and I wanted this night to be special. In addition, Andi ended up with me in the front of the stage. She has had the week from Hell and has been running back and forth to the Intensive Care ward all week. We even stopped by the hospital before she drove me over to the Square. She wasnt sure up till the last minute whether she could get through the show. Im so glad she decided she could. It was a welcome respite for her and I think helped her feel some comfort. Stand was not comfort music.
We looked around at the thousands of people in the Square and noticed some of the police had riot gear. Hmmmm. I didnt think GBS fans were THAT demonstrative, but I guess alcohol and ten thousand people sometimes dont mix well. Better to be cautious, I suppose. I just hope the bys didnt call them out for the OKPers that were in attendance that evening. I know there was a slew of us Stage Bob: Me, Andi, Carol, Jim, Kathy, Cathie, Kristin, Jen, Chrystle, ShellyAnn, Marnie, Rebekah, Sandy, Columbine, Amanda, and others. Stage Alan/Murray held Lynda, Toolie and Christina and some others too. Tell me who you were! Now, please forgive me if I dont type your name. I am horrible at remembering names. That said, if I leave you out, please tell me and Ill add you name to the list here. |
