Barra MacNeils
in Staten Island
A little bit of Cape Breton in the States , February, 2005

My hearts in the Highlands. The Highlands are here! The Barra MacNeils play some of the music that soothes the savage beast within me. Their ability to pull me out of the doldrums, get my feet tapping and sing along with them is the stuff everyone should experience.????

Andi rode the bus down to Philly for to go with me to see the show. It was held at the College of Staten Island in New York. When we got there, I had a sinking feeling about the evening as the Vagina Monologues were playing at the theatre in the same building. It seemed that everyone was carrying pink things, a sure sign they were going to see the play. The table for merchandize for the Barras show wasnt even marked. The VM tables had pink balloons and streamers all over. When we wandered over to the table, we discovered a surprise a Barras Christmas DVD! So both of us snapped one up. I thought the new CD had been released, but we later found out from Sheumas that it would come out in April.

Even though I bought tickets relatively late, we got great seats, right in front of Stewart, Andis favorite. The seats were about full by the time the show was really rockin.

They came out and started right into the
Clumsy Lover Set. That set has to be one of my all-time favorites where fiddle music is concerned. One of these days Im going to be able to play that set on my fiddle.
Rattlin Roarin Willie was the next fiddle tune. Boy! Two in a row of that dynamite Cape Breton fiddle music had me reeling. RRW is my favorite track along with Queen of Argyle on the Racket in the Attic CD.

Nancy-O, a song written by Stewart with a definite trad bend, followed. He seemed very happy tonight to be where he was. A couple times I caught him smiling broadly at Andi. She just enjoys this music so much.
Then another song followed an a capella one Coaltown Road. I have heard numerous Cape Breton musicians sing this song and the Barras and the Men of the Deeps sing it best.

They then played a set of stepdance tunes. Lucy was amazing she danced with Stewart, fiddled and banged on the bodhran. Kyle allowed everyone to have a break while he stood at the mic and read a bunch of mis-phrased Church Bulletins. Some I had heard before from the Internet but some were brand new to me. The audience had a good laugh.
