32. Joseph HALES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 was born about 1810 in North Bradley, Wiltshire, England and was christened 16 Jul 1826 in North Bradley, Wiltshire, England. He died 9 Nov 1895 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois (?). Joseph HALES married Elizabeth TILEY on 26 Jun 1851 in North Bradley, Wiltshire, England.

Joseph emigrated 1886? from Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. [Parents]

wife, Elizabeth Tiley listed on 1900 census as living with son (only child), John Hales, and as having emigrated to the US in 1886 - possible that Joseph came with her to the US, as he didn't die until 1895 - guessing he died in Chicago.

from www.hales.org
The North Bradley land map of 1841 shows that John and Joseph Hales occupied a house and garden on Church Lane, identified as parcel #977. The 1880 map did not show any dwelling on the property. The 1851 census indicates that John was still living on Church Lane and was 75 years old. He was widowed, the head of the household, born in Westbury, Wiltshire, and his occupation was cordwainer (shoemaker). He was living with his son, Joseph Hales, and Joseph's eight year old daughter, Leah Hales. We could not find a record of John Hales' death, although it must have been before 1861 as he was not listed in that census.

33. Elizabeth TILEY 1, 2, 3 was born Jul 1817 in England. She died after 1886 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois.

Elizabeth emigrated 1886 from Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. [Parents]

Tiley/Tilley confusion

Tiley, rhyming with 'wily', is a completely separate name from Tilley, rhyming with 'willy'. The name Tilley is widespread over Southern England and the Midlands. The name Tiley is mainly localised in the counties of Gloucestershire,Somerset and Wiltshire with appreciable migration to London and some migration across the River Severn to Wales.
The name Tiley was probably derived in early medieval times from the small village of Tiley in Dorset near the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire. Several derivations of Tilley have been proposed consistent with its widespread distribution.

There are numerous spelling varients of both names, the commonest one being substitution of 'y' for 'i'. These are not significant. What is significant is the single or double 'l'. Unfortunately (for us!) there were no 'accepted rules' of English spelling in medieval times and the double 'l' was not in common usage. Hence before about 1600 , you cannot be sure whether a written "Tiley" means a Tiley or a Tilley. On rare occasions this confusion in spelling persisted as late as 1750.

am researching Farrs from same area. I have a Henry W. Farr, b. 1826 in or nearBath, according to family tradition. He traveled to Australia in search of gold. Then finding none, returned to England before emigrating to the U.S. in 1857. He met his wife on board ship (Bride Meade). Children's names are Isabella, William, Mary Ann, Ida Victoria, Alfred, and George Ezekiel. Any connection?

ESTINA SWEDISH BAPTIST
CHURCH

Because they wanted to worship God in their native Swedish language, the first Swedish Baptist Church in Saunders County was organized on Sept. 3, 1870, in the Estina community, some five miles northeast of what is now Mead. There were 17 charter members and **Pastor Axling**, an itinerant preacher, was chairman of the organizational meeting. P.O. Yeltman, (Grandfather of Verna Moser, Agnes Karlson, and Elsie Williams, all living at Mead today), was elected elder. On many occasions afterwards he served as minister and preacher when no regular preacher was to be had. A. Edquist and Ben Johnson were also leaders.

In 1878, Rev. G. Peterson was called as pastor. Because they wanted a permanent place to worship rather than the schoolhouse and homes, C. Uppman deeded land in the northeast quarter of Sec. 12 of Marietta Precinct to the church on July 8, 1878; and the Estina Baptist Church was completed in 1879.

Many of the members lived a long distance from the church; and in 1889, 18 members of the Estina Church left their mother church and formed the First Baptist Church of Mead.

Those remaining at the Estina Church continued holding services for about 25 more years until the decision to disband was made. On Sept.17, 1920, the land was deeded to Charley Nelson and the buildings were moved to the Nelson farm. The church became a blacksmith shop, and the parsonage was used as a work shed and for storage.

On Sept. 3, 1932, a memorial service of the Estina Swedish Baptist Church was held at the place where the church originally stood, and a memorial stone was unveiled. That stone is still there today.

BIRTH: GS#102847. On page 2 of a letter to Alma Findlay from Joseph Christenson in the 1930's lists: "8. Please note these changes." On pp 1-2 of a letter to Jack from Ralph & Mildred dated 6 May 1972/3 lists: "I don't think I found the birth entry for James Findlay, her husband, and I think the date of 19 Jul 1797 is wrong and could have been confused with a date of another James, son of John Findlay and Janice Alston, who was born in the same town on 7 July 1797. The first solid date for James Findlay comes from the Parochial Register of Ayr- Loudoun- Births 1796-1819, Marriages 1796-1819 Book No. 603/2, p10. 1798 March 21st James natural son of John Findlay and Margaret Campbell privately baptized. I would judge that he must have been born more like Dec of 1797 or Jan 1798. The Loudoun Parish church where he was baptized is actually in the middle of the town of New Milns."
