On 25 March 1856 he married Catherine Ann Partington in the Salt Lake Endowment House. To this union nine children were born: Anna Isabella, Alma, Hugh William, Heber, Mary, George Daniel, Charlotte Catherine, Frank Partington, and Ellen. In 1857 he married Mary Ellen Smith as his plural wife. The following seven children blessed this marriage; Arthur Sidney, Clara Jane, Brigham Hugh, James William, Charles Henry, Nephi, and Walter. The same day he was married to Ane Marie Dorthea Nelson by whom three children were born: Leon Jared, Horace, and Dora.

In the fall of 1869 President Young called Hugh and his families to help settle Bear Lake country. Arriving May 22, 1870, they resided in Laketown, Fish Haven, and Paris. In 1878 he was called to open the mission on the Shetland Islands. While here, President Budge called him to preside over the Scottish Mission. He had no money with which to pay his steamboat passage to Scotland, but, true to his unwavering faith, he packed his suitcase, ready to obey, and walked toward the wharf where he was to sail. As he passed the post office, he asked for his mail and received a letter from a strange lady who wrote him of her interest in articles he had written for the Millennial Star and enclosed for him a five-pound note which was equal to about twenty-five dollars in American money. In 1915 his son, Bishop Findlay, related this incident in Boise, Idaho, stating that his father did not know the lady who sent the gift. Brother Peter G. Johnson was present and said, "That was my mother who sent the letter and money."

Elder Findlay went to Scotland and presided until he was released in 1880. While in Scotland this time, he copied or had someone copy about three thousand names from Scottish records. In Bear Lake Stake, Brother Findlay, who faithfully honored every call made of him, was a member of the high council, president of the high priests, and a patriarch. In the latter office he was active until his death March 2, 1900, in Paris, Idaho. —D.U.P. Files

William Weir Fyfe was born in Richerton, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, on October 22, 1843, the eighth and last child of Robert and Janet Turrlock Fyfe. William's father was administrator from Scotland to England, and financially able to send him to a blacksmith apprentice school. After five years in school and three years as an apprentice, William was issued his credentials. Sailing to America as a convert to Mormonism, he was called upon to put his skill to good use when he made a new bearing and installed it on the ship.

William located in Cottonwood where he did blacksmithing for President Brigham Young and cared for his horses. From there he went to Castle Gate but finding the work unsatisfactory, decided to go to Idaho. He set up shop in Thornton in 1805, later, in Lyman and still later in Archer, where he made his permanent home. Here he farmed and operated a blacksmith shop. William sharpened many of the tools that quarried the rocks for Ricks College.

William had three wives: Elizabeth Hunter, Annie Affleck and Christina Wylie. He was the father of sixteen children. When he was an old man and Christina was in ill health, their son Frank and his family came to live with and take care of them. William died May 30, 1935, and Christina the following November 22nd. They are buried in the Sutton Cemetery. —Lola A. Morgan Fyfe

Their Contribution To Utah
To the Empire of India

About this time Lorenzo Snow was opening up the mission in Switzerland and concluded to extend his missionary operations to India. He called Elder William Willis and Elder Hugh Findlay to go to India as missionaries. When they arrived in India there were only six members in the little branch. Meetings were held in the residence of James P. Meik at 2 1/2 Bazaar Street in Calcutta and at the Matthew McCune residence in Cooley Bazaar. Joseph Sutton was baptized by Elder Willis on December 28, 1851. Soon after a lecture hall 17x47 feet was built by Elder Meik in which meetings were held.
