Chapter Eleven

So okay, Miss Patty, whats the deal?  Why are you so spaced out today? D asked as soon as they got into the Mustang and shut the doors. You were fine this morning.

Justin told me earlier that he saw someone at Subway today that he used to know.  When D didnt say anything, Patty continued.  Someone he apparently raped about five years ago.

D was stunned and sat back, shocked.  Oh my God, Justin raped someone?

Patty nodded.  Thats what he says happened.  Someone named Lizzie.  But there isnt anyone named Lizzie here.

D shrugged.  Who knows?  Maybe its someone you dont know.  Lizzie could be a nickname or something.

Patty sighed.  I dont know.  But either which way, if you ask me, its just all fucked up.  She threw the Mustang into gear and backed out.  I dont know if Justins going to want to go to a party. But he cant stay at the house forever.

D laughed mirthlessly.  Well, isnt this a pretty mess?  Didnt think when you woke up this morning youd have this kind of workday, did you?

Patty laughed at the irony.  Yeah, youre right.  To think we thought this was going to be a good day.  Arent you glad you came in with me? D laughed and then fell silent.  They drove quietly for a few minutes. Finally, Patty spoke. Well, I guess we better get ready to go to a party.

D nodded.   After another moment of silence, she said,  Nick likes you.  A lot.

No he doesnt.  He just thinks he does.  Patty just smiled at D.

D rolled her eyes.  Youre just saying that cause you like JC.

Pattys face turned red.  No its just she thought for a moment.  Nick is beautiful, isnt he?

D nodded. Hmm, stunning.

Patty turned to D, who was looking at a picture of AJ from a teenybopper magazine Patty had in her car.

What are we going to do?  D sighed.  How am I supposed to choose between two of the most charming men in the world?

D and Patty looked at each other and then at a picture of the Backstreet Boys.  Good question, Patty replied, looking at Nicks handsome face and remembering JCs perfect smile.  I just wish I had an answer to everything.

D stayed quiet, knowing Patty meant more than choosing whom to date.  Justins dilemma posed a bigger problem, and D didnt know where to start to solve that one.
