| Chapter One Patty opened one eye cautiously and groaned. Sunlight streamed in the bedroom window, painting golden pools on the wine colored carpet. Seven a.m. Time to get up. She yawned, stretched, and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She sat for a minute and ran a hand through her hair before deciding to stand up. She stumbled to the bathroom and gazed at the rumpled girl in the mirror. Another day, another dollar, she thought, grinned, and turned around to prepare her shower. When she got out, she stood for a few minutes in front of her closet trying to decide what to wear. She shrugged, not seeing anything particularly special, so she just went to the kitchen to eat breakfast in her towel. She loved mornings. It was nice and quiet, not like the afternoons when her three roommates were busy bouncing around. Jade, at twenty-two, was an aspiring actress. She had done a few commercials and was working on getting the part of Janet in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Lately, she had been walking around humming Dammit Janet to herself. Dawnovan, actually Donovan, but he liked the w, was nineteen and a bouncer at the local hot spot, The Sponge. At six feet, two inches with light brown hair and dark blue eyes, he was gorgeous. He was also gay. Randi was twenty and worked at the local radio station as a disc jockey. She had her own show from six p.m. until 11 p.m. playing music from the local scene. Patty was twenty-two and worked as a producer at Subway Records out of Liberty Valley, Texas, where they lived. Patty hummed a happy tune while she pressed the buttons on the microwave to heat up the leftover pizza from the night before. Le-et freedom ring! she sang loudly when the microwave beeped. Would you shut up? a sleepy voice yelled, irritated, from the other room. Patty giggled. Time to wake up, my dear. Youre going in with me today. Randi walked into the kitchen, muttering. Morning people make me fucking sick, she growled as she poured a glass of orange juice. And I will do no such thing. Patty smiled and picked a pepperoni off her plate. Guess whos coming in to record? She asked and bit the pepperoni. Randi sighed and rolled her eyes. No idea, she deadpanned. Who? Patty grinned evilly. Youll see. Now go get dressed. Speak for yourself. Randi sighed again and finished her juice. She put the glass in the sink and looked at Patty, who was happily munching away, pausing only to take a drink of Coke. Can I ask you one thing? Patty smiled brightly. Sure, D. Whats up? How come you didnt ask Dawnovan or Jade to go with you? Why me? I talked to them, told them why I wanted you all to join me, but we all agreed this surprise was best saved for you, Patty explained, her smile growing bigger as Ds expression grew more and more confused. Now go get dressed. And look pretty, she continued, nudging D in the direction of Ds room. Youre so weird, D laughed as she went into her room. Trust me, later youll be thanking me. Patty grinned, finally satisfied, and went back to her own room to get dressed.
