Next to nothing is known about the early life of Johannes Pettersson Haggman, or Johan Haggman, as he became known. We know that he worked as an inspector at a nobleman�s estate before being appointed lansman (county sheriff), and he was later appointed carta sigillat�-ombudsman, collecting fees whenever someone got married.
In 1789 he married the daughter of a fellow lansman, Juliana Elisabeth Kallenberg, in Ossjo (L). The bride was eight months pregnant when the wedding took place... When she died of phthisis, a 46-year-old mother of eight, he eventually got romantically involved with Sofia Ivarsdotter Landstrom, a miller�s daughter, who bore him a child out of wedlock and whom he later married. Sofia bore him his 10th child, a son, in 1822, before both she and Johan died within a few months of one another in 1826.
Juliana Kallenberg was the daughter of lansman, court of appeal inspector and hospital inspector Conrad Kallenberg (of the Bronnestad Kallenbergs) and his wife, Botilda Lundstrom, a parish clerk and organist�s daughter.
