Chapter II
He did not know how long he had been standing there, watching a shut door. It was not going to open again, not unless he opened it. Who would be coming to see him so late in the evening except for her? And she was gone, again.
It seemed that she was always going or gone. The time they spent not gone or not going hardly registered. Maybe because the aching was there even when they were together. He anticipated the parting. He anticipated it while they were together. He could never anticipate the reunion. Maybe because the reunion was overshadowed by the parting. Maybe he just thought too much, felt too much and said too little.
That had always been his way. Even before. When they were not together or apart. When they just were. Family friends of each other. Hugging, smiling, laughing, flirting, teasing. Before when they were like brother and sister. Even then he wondered where she went and why she never came back. Even then it seemed the longing was there. Summer breaks and Christmases were always too short. Maybe because everyone else was there too. So it only appeared to be too short. Or maybe she made time disappear.
