The martyred nation of Congo got its grant of independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960. On that day Congos first prime minister, the immortal Patrice Lumumba, addressed his people and pointed them to a bright new dawn on the African horizon. Six months later, on January 17, 1961, Patrice Lumumba was murdered in cold blood. He was only 36. Recently declassified information suggests that Lumumbas assassination might have beenordered by Allen Dulles, then head of the US Central Intelligence Agency.
Belowis an excerpt fromPatrice LumumbasIndependence Day addresss, delivered on Congo Independence Day, June 30,1960.
